WISE Bank info please

WISE Bank info please

Postby garyizme » Thu May 26, 2022 1:11 pm

I am a non resident and with Sabadell.

Due to recent bad service plus fees I have opened a euro Wise account and will transfer my direct debits to that.

I do use the Sabadell debit card so have ordered a card but the only one seemed to be in Sterling.

Is there a charge to use that in Spain apart from the minimal charges listed or should I be ordering something different?

Thanks in advance

Thanks

So it looks like the debit card I have ordered should work then. I just read Your account and all the currencies on it will be connected to the debit card. As long as you have enough money available in any currency in your currency accounts, you should be able to use the card.

Your Wise card will hold any of over 50 different currencies. So £, €, $ etc.

If your card is registered to a UK address you will most likely find that ATMs in Spain charge you around €5-€7 per withdrawal (this applies to most UK registered bank cards since Brexit). There will be no charge to use it as a debit card for making payments in shops and restaurants etc.

As a non resident, have you considered a UK Santander account?

Qualifying accounts allow you to to draw fee free cash from any Spanish mainland bank ATM.....Just remember to press the "no convert" button when withdrawing your cash.

The money is taken from your UK account a few days later and the conversion rate is at the visa/bank rate.

Surely the simplest and most economic way is to transfer Sterling your your Wise a/c, convert it to Euros in the app then withdraw/spend with the Wise card?

There will be some charges but they are pretty minimal and a fraction of what you're likely to incur with a UK debit card.

Any U.K. bank account you have, that transfers an exchange to euros will incur a significant charge, whether its hidden with a poorer exchange rate with “no fees” or, the other way round. They are all usually costly to you. So, find a Spain account with conditions that you can achieve to keep the account free, then use the wise account to do the topping up with periodic transfers.

If you do the leg work the financial savings are very rewarding. Im non res, and don’t pay any bank fees and only the bare minimum to Wise (approx £4 a month) for transfers as and when.

Good luck in your search.

The way Wise works is that if you setup accounts in different currencies these moneies are held in bank accounts in counties that use that currency. So your sterling account is in London, a Euro account in Brussels and. Dollar account in the US. As long as you have sufficient funds in these accounts any payment or withdrawal is regarded as being loca. So no big transfer costs. However, in Spain the cost of taking money from an ARM is high, unless its you bank.

So go into your account and set up a Euro account. You have to move some money to do so. Then you can move money between accounts at very low costs.
