Best data only sim network

Postby Gladys Street » Wed Jan 08, 2020 6:24 pm

Hola,

Anyone got advice for the best data only sim in Spain? Not sure how much data I use a month but dont think its a lot. Need it for occasional mifi hotspot in my spanish home but perhaps back in the UK on occasion.

I use Yoigo - https://www.yoigo.com/tarifas-moviles?t ... uoQAvD_BwE

I've looked at a few data only sims and they seem more expensive the combined data and phone calls? Or ones i've found so far.

Yoigo have got 40gb per month with unlimited calls at €32 and 15gb for €25 also with unlimited calls in Spain, mobile, landline, cross-network. I have an older contract off them for 25gb per month which I recently used to give me TV when travelling abroad. Cheapest Yoigo do is €14 per month for 3gb.

You may be able to check your data usage in your settings - under sometimes - 'data usage' within general settings.

If hot spotting wifi for TV, then chews up a bit - I did 5gb in a day, but was with TV running in the background for a lot of the day. If for connecting to a tablet for a bit of web browsing & LITTLE you tube, you don't need much data. It's video which chews up easily the most data, not so much audio and less so web browsing.

€12 for 4 GB works out at almost double the price of yoiga on their 15 GB plan

€25 according to the Yoigo website.

In any case it's not just about cost, first you have to know which network actually provides a usable service at your location, no deal is any good if you can't use it!!!

Hmmm, this Septuagenarian is still confused. So if I divide the gigabytes by the price per month does that show me the best deal? Or as A.N.Other suggests the best coverage in my area needs to be the main factor? It was far easier when I had my account with the G.P.O. and connected via telegraph poles!
But thanks for trying to help me. :text-thankyouyellow:

So if I divide the gigabytes by the price per month does that show me the best deal? That makes mathematical sense. Yes. More GB per month, the better.

Coverage as A N other mentions is also important - to be fair we used to have an issue with Yoigo years ago, then they put up a load more antennas - most I think now have decent coverage.

Below is a link to a network map of coverage in Spain - so you may be able to use this to cross-reference with with any provider you check - https://www.nperf.com/en/map/ES/-/-/sig ... 115&zoom=5 Also probably worth mentioning, is if you get a 'sin permanancia' contract, you are not tied in, so you can do a month or whatever and if a better deal comes along or signal not what you'd hoped for, you can still swap to an alternative provider.

Pretty unreliable coverage map, according to it I shouldn't be getting much from Movistar yet even indoors I'm getting 2/3 bars out of 5 bars (-102dBm for the tecchies) which is pretty decent and gives me about 30mb download and 5mb up. Outside I can get 4 bars and as good as -95dBm.

Other networks are considerably worse as proved by trialing each.

Typically such maps are compiled from random anonymous data culed from passing mobiles which explains why most roads appear to be well covered but with thin, patchy, or even nil coverage away from them.

I am looking to change to a Spanish SIM/number - mainly for medical and other stuff here now I'm resident. Currently still use my Vodafone subscription from Holland. I often only get 1 bar or sometimes nil, with an SMS later when it reconnects (welcome to Spain etc...)
I'm looking for a local provider with decent coverage - Movistar?
