Hi,
The last I heard, community tv was a bit of a hot potato. When I made some inquiries about having it connected I was told that because the Spanish government would make public announcements to the nation about vitally important issues via the tv stations, all households are required to have it connected including 'new builds'. However in many cases the connecting part hasn't happened and I was offered the option to have it done along with my sat dish installation for an 'extra' 60 euros.
I declined at the time and put it to our community administrators to try and sort but to no avail as yet.
Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

However, if it has been connected, you should simply connect a TV cable from the wall socket to your TV. I don't know if you have satellite TV as part of your community but you should definitely have Spanish digital TV. This will either be accessed with a digital set top box or, with all modern TVs, digital built in (like freeview in UK). Then go to the digital part of your TV, something like AV1 or HDMI1 if you have HD. Then initial setup (choose language and country from this) and then perform a scan to pick up all the channels. You should get around 70 odd TV channels and about 30 radio ones.
If you have satellite TV, go to TV and perform a search and it will pick up the satellite channels if they are there.
It is a community requirement to provide Spanish TV to all the properties.
If you are using a set top box, connect the TV aerial cable to the box first and then another one from the box to the TV.

Thanks marcliff,

I didn't know this and wondered why our community had put these aerials up a couple of years ago, when they don't seem to be able to get agreements for much else. Now we know why!

Wish a community requirement would come out for Broadband connection to all properties.

thanks everyone, no luck with the community connection, can anyone recommend a reliable satelite system provider. We had considered the internet system but don't want to get tied into a monthly fee or annual renewal fee that several providers are talking about.

Have you asked your community President about the community connection? We had a few problems at first connecting our TDT set top digibox to the community aerial but a Spanish neighbour came in and fiddled with the aerial connections in our wall box in the house and managed to connect our box to the community aerial. All the new houses in the past few years have been fitted with aerial boxes and sockets.

We find the TDT spanish digital system suits us and we get enough to watch by changing the language setting of all the UK and American shows and films on there. Although we are non-resident and don't want to be tied into subscriptions, we might feel different if we were in Spain permanently.

It is a legal requirement for communities to provide the Spanish TDT - or at least to the main external connection point outside of your property. Technically internally (cables, wiring etc) you are responsible - though communities individual rules (and generosity) may vary.

Any other systems, such as free to air English satellite or other language TV is not a legal requirement.

To set up a community type satellite system, can be either done through the community itself or through a group of individuals within the community that jointly require a service (and who are prepared to share costs). Or as many have done when cannot reach a general agreement, put your own dish up (on private property).

We have installed & maintain a number of community systems of the years, so happily will advise if anyone wishes to contact us through advert on forum.

Broadband in communities is a little more tricky - the main issue that large service providers business model is far more profitable for individual customers, so not keen to offer a group / discounted solution. There are some smaller rebroadcasting companies offering community broadband, but the reality is speeds and stability which currently many are not happy with and costs which are still of no real benefit for a community over an individual.

Some companies are pulling a little 'sneaky' trick and offering satellite internet designed for a single user and then spread signal between a number of users - we have reviewed a few of these installations, due to users of such systems being unhappy - cannot share between too many users as these type of systems will fall over - so back to the beginning, for now - you are better off with your own (single) internet connection. Unless you can share with a nearby or next door neighbour (which may be possible with wi fi extenders or even additional cabling).

TV or at least through satellite, is different as once installed, it's paid for and is easily shared.
