Connecting sat dish to TV
Connecting sat dish to TV
by Mr Scoopy » Thu Jun 04, 2020 2:52 pm
Hi, I am looking for advice , at present I watch UK tv with a 1.9m satellite connected to a GI satellite receiver which is connected with a HMDI lead to the TV ,I would like to upgrade to a wall mounted tv and do away with the GI box and connect the dish directly to the tv, is this possible? and if so what am I looking for in the technical info of the tv to insure I can do this , ( I am thinking of getting a LG 55 inch smart TV ) thanks for any info.

Most new smart TVs have a satellite connector and tuner built in. Mine has a Freesat, Satellite, Terrestrial (Digital) TV tuners.
I must admit, though, the electronic programme guide for Freesat is pretty rubbish with small writing and a pale grey against light blue background. For that reason I do it through my Humax box even though the picture is not as good (not that much difference to be honest).

Look at the back of the tv for a satellite connector and connect your leads to the tv before you put on the wall also go into picture settings and turn down the Backlight setting to below 50 your tv will last a lot longer

DVB standards can be confusing but fortunately you don't really need to know that much about them, you only have to make sure any TV you may be considering has an 'F' connector, the same screw on antenna connector as you will have on your current GI box.
You can also look for 'Triple tuner' as that means a TV can receive analog and digital terrestrial TV and satellite.
Note: Many - but by no means all - Smart TV's are satellite capable so don't rely on that alone, for instance my fairly new Samsung 49" isn't.
I'm pretty sure you will not find a Freesat TV in Spain, it will carry the Freesat logo if it is.

Some TVs bought in Spain as generic "European" models, and so with a bit of jiggery in the Menu systems, can be made to load up in UK mode, and offer Freesat, giving the advantages of a full 7 day programme guide and dedicated updated channel list. Without Freesat, you get only "now and next" programme guide, and no channel updates, but a few channels that are not on Freesat (C4HD for example)

Designations when reviewing specifications.
DVB-T Terrestrial antenna (Spanish)
DVB-C Cable - no use unless you are on a cable system
DVB-S/S2 - Satellite
Generally speaking - Freesat TV's are not available in Spain - as Freesat is a specifically licensed and sold in the UK - though perhaps as other poster states there may be some Euro spec ones floating around that with a little fiddling you can unlock.
