Curious T.V. fault
Curious T.V. fault

Arrive back from hols, plug in T.V. but no picture. It does not seem to recognise the signal from any input, whether T.V. aerial or HDMI.
Then after being plugged in on standby all night, Bingo! it's back to normal.
It's a Sony, 10 years+
Something inside must be getting tired, but what?
Is it worth getting fixed, and if so, where?

Personally I think you had a good few years from it, lots of reasonable more up to date TV now available at a reasonable price.

The fault would be the capacitors being drained of all current and getting past their sell by date they need renewing but as previous post says is it worth it only you know .

Thanks for the replies.
I wondered if it might be something like capacitors.
It is working fine, otherwise, seems a shame to bin it for the sake of a couple of small components.

Try pushing the HDMI or start lead in more in case it is loose

If the issue keeps repeating itself:
Most 10-year-old TV´s are not worth fixing - as more then often economically it does not stand up. Add that to the fact the rest of the components are also 10 years old, so something else will also fail at some point - ultimately, it is throwing money at the wall & usually best to bite the bullet an replace.
What TV you got 10 years ago for your budget is not the same today, so will be able to get a replacement for less than you paid before.
Sony TV´s a little overpriced today - Samsungs & LG both decent quality vs budget.

Sony TVs are no longer Sony I believe Vestal took them over they own more that 40% of the tv manufacturers now
A new set of capacitors for your tv will cost around 70 Euros fitted not really worth it as Paul says buy a new one of find a nearly new one plenty about for cheap money .
If you do decide to change the capacitors yourself make sure you discharge them before you unsolder them the retain a heavy voltage even when not plugged in ,the big one could be storing around 800 volts enough to kill you and it will take a few days to fully discharge unless you have the correct equipment to do it .

Thanks for all the advice about brands and taking care with capacitors.
I'd like a new T.V. with a larger screen but the missus says size isn't everything.
I foresee marital disharmony in the T.V. aisle.

I can´t find the supporting evidence that Sony isn´t making their own TV´s? Sony is not on Vestals list - however it is quite common practice for main manufacurers to ship the parts for assembly to countries with cheaper labour. Sony does do this, as do many others. China, India, Mexico etc.
That aside, you can´t go too far wrong with an LG or Samsung TV - Sony seems to price themselves a little higher. Budget brands often seem to have a shorter shelf life, so you end up not saving money.

Capacitors do fail but when they do it's almost invariably fatal, spontaneous recovery is rare.
Also when one gives up the ghost the rest are rarely that far behind it.
