Gi satellite box
by Starman » Mon Jul 15, 2019 8:32 am
just arrived to find my GI satellite box dead. No lights, no clock. I would guess it is possible there is a fuse inside but who knows? It is 4 years old so out of warranty.
I am by Marquesa golf so any suggestions where to get a replacement?

If you have the right tv you may not need a box, look by the aerial input and see if there's a screw in attachment next to the aerial input. If so connect your dish to it and scan for channels.

Similar thing happened with my GI box. All of a sudden ...dead.
Got a replacement (called Engel) from MediaMarkt for about 85E. Not so easy to use but cheaper than the rip off price I was quoted for a GI one.
Over the years when I've been in Spain I've had a few electronic devices (mains powered) fail. Not so in the UK.
Wondering if it's just unlucky or down to the quality of the mains supply.
And yes, I do use an anti surge outlet.
BTW the cheapest place for boxes is Ebay. I've had a cheapo FTA for over 5 years in the UK, never a problem.

You are correct. Many issues are down to the quality of the mains supply. Fluctuations in power & spikes can and do cause damage to hardware. Anti-surge protectors can help. Unplugging box when not using it, can also help.
On communities with shared type systems - the antenna input (satellite or terrestrial) can also carry an electrical charge, as often these systems signals (in communities) are amplified - so you can get a surge or damage though the antenna socket, not just the power socket. I have seen a few instances of boxes which were damaged and were unplugged from the mains - the surge came in from the antenna input - so if away or not using for a while, unplug the antenna too - if on a community.
Other than that - generally speaking, processors do not like heat and dust. Dirt finds its way in through cooling vents, covers the processors, they get hotter and hotter until box starts having issues due to overheating. Again - unplug from the mains when not using - allow to cool off. Often 'standby' is not 'off' and power still allows power/heat into box. Keep well ventilated, airflow around all of this type of equipment.
