How to not blow up your TV equipment

How to not blow up your TV equipment

Postby Paul - TV Techie » Tue Jul 06, 2021 1:12 pm

Im reporting this as beginning to think is more common that I first realised.

As most are aware, you do not leave your TV on 24/7 - when I say on, I mean literally with the screen on, every day, without turning off. Most will say - but of course....

For those using any type of TV box, whether be cable, TDT, satellite or IPTV, this does need turning off. When you turn your TV off, it does not turn the separate device off (unless specificially set up to).

What it would appear some are doing, is turning the TV itself off, but never, ever turning their TV service box off.

I recently reviewed one piece of equipment which had been left on continually for over 2 years, longer than I would have given it - processor had been damaged by the heat.

Just like your TV or most other electronic devices, if you do not periodically turn off, device can get hotter and hotter and end up causing damage to the device itself.

If you do not turn off your TV box or satellite receiver, chances are the box will fry itself well before it would have done and shorten its service life. Make sure your box is turned off - as well as your TV.

Paul,
I never turn my TV off at the TV itself but always switch it off at the remote control, been doing this for 16 years, is that what you mean?

Hi Clive,

If you are using 2 separate pieces of equipment - IE the TV itself and a set-top box - of any type satellite/cable/IPTV - you would need to switch off the set-top box as well as the TV.

If you have 2 remotes, 1 for each device, then both must be turned off individually.

If you are just using a TV with an inbuilt tuner, so no other equipment - then just the TV to turn off.
