Internet speed - puzzled

Internet speed - puzzled

Postby 2Sheds » Tue Jun 15, 2021 1:31 pm

I am with Telfy and have just upgraded my contract to a faster 300 Mbs speed (it was 50 Mbs)

They said the change was immediate so I eagerly tried a speed test on my laptop but it still showed approx 50 Mbs.
I then tried my Fire tablet which was the same 50 Mbs.
I finally tried my Galaxy phone - bingo! The speed test showed 250 Mbs.

All of the above tests were over wifi. So I'm wondering if the age of my devices has a bearing on things. The laptop is about 9 years old and the tablet about 4 years old. I am guessing that they do not have the latest wifi cards. Having Googled this, my understanding is that older wifi cards have a maximum speed of 50 Mbs.

So my Galaxy phone (8 months old) is capable of faster wifi speeds. I just wondering if my understanding is correct and whether anyone else has had similar issues with older kit.

I'd appreciate any advice.

Yes wifi is the issue connect an Ethernet cable directly to the router and you will get the speed. Else you need later devices that support the later wifi standards
Make sure you connect at 5Ghz on Wi-fi

If you have an old laptop it will not be able to handle the higher speeds, even with an ethernet connection in many cases.

Most laptops younger than 10 years will have a gigabit Ethernet connection
This will handle 300Mbs
Very old laptops had a 100mbitbwhich would struggle for sure

Sounds like a good idea, thanks.

Interestingly there's a chap a few doors down who has also upgraded his internet speed to 300 Mbs. He is also getting a pathetic speed on his old laptop, whilst newer devices work ok. However, he is convinced that the very same laptop is achieving much faster speeds on Fiber back home in Scotland. Either he's mistaken or perhaps it's a difference in the type of routers used. Either way I'm surprised that ISP's don't seem to put much emphasis on specifying the type of adapters required to get the speed they advertise. All they say is that you should use an ethernet cable instead of WiFi. But surely a 100 Mbs ethernet adapter is still going to be a bottleneck!

I really can not see why anyone needs more than 50 mbps download speeds I can only get 10 mbps in my property as I have to have "line of sight " connection and I manage perfectly well with that , it would of course be nice to have a little more speed
There are at least 4 computers and 2 tablets and a mobile phone also my main house phone running all day

Completely agree.
It's just that Telfy were offering the upgrade from 50 to 300 for no additional charge. So naturally I was keen to make use of it. But in doing so it's opened up a can of worms with regard to device limitations!
