Internet Tech Query

Internet Tech Query

Postby Juanita » Sun Nov 22, 2020 11:59 am

We currently have a fibre optic service with Telfy who we are quite happy with. They rang me a while ago with a new promotion which I think was in respect of the Mb they offer. My query is if you subscribe for 300 mb does that mean you get a better results when using more than one laptop/tablet/phone/IPTV. Subsequently 1000mb better than 300mb. Sorry to sound dim but I would appreciate an explanation as to how these things work!

Very rare that you will get the speed they offer but they normally say "up to" a certain speed
Yes the more download speed you have the better the speed that will flow through your system but there are a lot of reasons why the speed is slower on say a tablet as opposed to a PC or a Set top box or a Firestick so if you are happy with the price go for the offer
I only have up to a maximum of 20mbps at my property but I manage to do everything I want to

Thanks jpeg I didn't realise that was the projected internet speed. Our IPTV service buffers occasionally. If I increase the potential speed maybe that would help?

Could do but there are many things that cause IPTV to buffer I use TvTap.Pro on a box and a Firestick and never have a problem

I’d suggest if you are running a number of devices then a higher download speed would benefit you generally speaking.

I'd suggest the figures published by all of these companies are comical.

No single household should ever need more than 300Mbps.

2 x TV's running 4K Netflix or IPTV 4K would be a maximum of 20Mbps x 2 = 40Mbps
1 x PlayStation - call it 4K too (absolute maximum bandwidth) 20Mbps
2 x Computers running web browsing / youtube - max 20Mbps.

Total 80Mbps - with 5 devices all running simultaneously (and these i've over estimated).

I think this is nothing but a load of sales nonsense - as ISP's are very good at making these promises, but if they can't offer decent stability when needed, then it doesn't matter if you have 100Mbps or 1000Mbps as that won't make the slightest bit of difference in everyday use.

The fact that the ISPs can tell you are doing a speed test and ping you back a good response, is all part of the con.

If you have a 300Mbps speed and have problems with your TV - then it's either the TV service itself (cheaper they are, the worse they usually are) or the ISP is not stable some of the time.

Thank you Paul for your detailed reply. I have opted to stay with Telfy but with an increased speed from 50 to 300. I now get around 80.

Telfy are usually pretty good, though every couple of weeks they have the odd glitch - we have them in the office for one of the connections.

I'd guess if you are getting 80Mbps, this a WiFi-connected speed - as WiFi is far more variable in terms of performance - how far the device is from the router etc. If running hardwire / ethernet cable - you should see faster speeds than 80Mbps, if paying for 300Mbps. It sounds like you are either a fair distance from the router or the device being used for the speedtest doesn't have the greatest WiFi antenna?

I'm sitting within 2 metres of the router with WiFi and getting now 380Mbps on a 500Mbps (supposedly) Telfy connection. So if you are paying for 300Mbps and seeing 80Mbps - it's still lower than it should be. Perhaps the WiFi signal is a little weak in parts of your house and booster is needed. Mind you 80Mbps as i've stated should be more than enough to run everything!

Thanks again Paul. When you mention a booster, what did you have in mind. I currently use TP Links for each TV we use. Is there something better?
