IPTV & VPN's a warning!

IPTV & VPN's a warning!

Postby W12 » Wed Apr 09, 2014 11:10 pm

Virtual private network (VPN) was initially developed to allow those outside of the office to access the company servers. Work from home, remote sites etc.

The basic principle used here is to use the internet to access a server in another country, then access the World Wide Web.
Because you have accessed the WWW from their remote location, the local provider assumes you are physically local, giving access to things like BBC, ITV, C4 & 5 catchup TV

The thing to bear in mind is if your router is set to a VPN all your web activity will route via the third party VPN. So any banking, personal messages, images (risky photos of the Mrs)etc. are routed through a server giving whoever hosts the server access to your personal data.

If you are using a desktop or laptop then Zenmate for Chrome is ideal and is free at the moment. You can set it to whatever country you want and turn it on and off so it is just active when watching TV. Works great with BBC iPlayer and other catch up. Also available for other browsers.
If you are using an android tablet, then Chrome Hola does the same thing as Zenmate is not yet available for Android. Problems with ITV catchup service, though.

My fault should have highlighted the bit that said "if your router is set to a VPN, all your web activity will route via the third party VPN"
Dipping in & out of free VPN / proxy's is fine if you remember to disconnect.
