MAG Box

MAG Box

Postby Ron Hill » Tue Jun 09, 2020 5:19 pm

I’ve recently noticed when I switch on my TV for the first time in the day it starts buffering within a few minutes. If I go to settings and do a re boot of the MAG box then it’s fine for the rest of the day.
Anyone any clues for fixing this or helpful comments as it’s a pest having to re boot every day

Are you powering down the box at night or just letting it go into standby?

Mostly it’s on standby but I sometimes unplug at night when I remember

I think you may have your answer then.

My TV and MAG boxes (I run two) are all powered from a remote controlled socket so last thing at night everything gets switched off completely, saves a bit of power too.

It's not the MAG box, it's either an ISP or TV service issue.

When the box is on standby - it's still on. As OP mentions you can 'power down' completely - which overnight of for longer periods can be a little better for the box as can get hot in these climates - certain MAGs run quite hot. Having said that, neither would be related to the buffering issue.

Unusual. However, standard IT first answer, which you are already doing - turn it all on and off.

On the surface of it, logic would dictate it's either the ISP having a morning wobble - which to be fair, is unusual as lSP loading more in evenings/weekends. Leaving possibly the service provider - though as it stands couldn't state 100% either way.

If repeated issues - take a log of the times when it does, as usually helps to further define where the issue is.

I tried this last night and unplugged the mag box and no buffering this morning. As buffering happens at different times of day depending when I switch on the tv and I have a steady 50mb download speed I don’t see it as an ISP issue I’m more inclined to think it’s down to the mag box being left on standby and getting hot which it certainly does. However, I’ll continue to monitor anyway as an overheating mag box is a concern in itself in terms of fire risk etc.

I've bought those little plastic stick on circles, act like little feet from one of the Chino shops and I've stuck one onto each corner underneath which allows it to stand up with a space between what it's standing on, then it has air circulating underneath, that perhaps keeps it a little cooler
