Modem and data only SIM

Modem and data only SIM

Postby Gladys Street » Sat Sep 07, 2019 11:46 am

Can somebody explain the pros and cons of using a modem and data only Sim on my laptop to get internet access in Spain? What are the likely costs of the modem and sim? Can I then get TV or movies on my laptop? Can I connect the modem to other TV boxes such as Amazon fireStick? Is it possible to cast programmes from my laptop to my TV?
It may sound I know what I’m talking about but I haven’t a clue!

The answer to your questions is yes to all depending on make and model of laptop
A modem will cost from between 80 to 150 euros, a data sim will vary as to the amount of data you purchase
If you have a smartphone then you can use that for a modem depending on the package you have from your network provider you can also cast TV from it if you have the correct TV

Thank you so much for your reply JPEG. You are so knowledgeable. I have a HP Pavillion with a Core i5 whatever that means!
I'm thinking of updating to a new Tablet anyway and using a data only sim with Orange cos they seem to have the best coverage in Spain. What do you think?
Any preference on modem, tablet and sim and is it best to buy online such as Amazon, in Media Mart or a local phone shop?

There are four principal Spanish mobile networks:

Orange
Movistar
Vodafone
Yoigo
Movistar is the most popular mobile operator in Spain, although in 2017 Vodafone ranked as providing the best 4G/LTE coverage servicing 96.5% of the country. Orange’s networks covers 91.7% of the country while Movistar and Yoigo cover 89%. The top three mobile networks in Spain also provide coverage in some of the more remote areas, while Yoigo did not perform so well in the countryside.

Huawei for Modem
Tablet I would not know as I detest the things
SIM card you need to get one that is unlimited download, I am currently testing 1 from an international provider
Have look at Amazon.es for modems but must be a SIM card modem if you want to spend look at the 5G offerings

Dear JPEG
Once again I am most obliged for your helpful response. I might alter the data sim supplier in the light of your comments. I think I will check which provider offers the best coverage across my residential area.
Kindest regards

Have a word with as many neighbours as you can to check on what signal they are getting on their mobiles and with whom
