Need new SIM ?
Need new SIM ?
by mcctinker » Wed Apr 04, 2018 1:49 pm
I have had my U.K. mobile with me since late Feb. It’s been great using it at no additional costs now that dating roaming charges have been dropped. It is my own unlocked iPhone, with a GiffGaff SIM in it. They are brilliant by the way.
I knew that I would only get 60 days ‘normal’ use, before GiffGaff twigged that I was staying overseas. I have now had notification that my usual package/coverage will finish in two weeks.
So I guess I need to get a Spanish SIM to go in my phone ? I assume this will mean my phone number changes ? Also, what will I potentially lose on my phone when I take the old SIM out and put the new one in ? Will I lose my What’s App conversations ? Contacts ? Photos ?
Who would you recommend as a decent provider at a reasonable cost ? And from what shop ? I currently have my home internet with Vega Fibra. Do they do SIM cards ?

Go and see the guys at Quesada Computers behind Sabadell and Santander banks on the main Street. Great packages with Lebara.

I have had an O2 PAYG sim in use in Spain for 10 months now, my wife has been using her EE contract phone for the same length of time. We've had no issues ( I don't see how it would adversely affect the telcos?). Perhaps it's a giff-gaff thing.

My understanding is that once data roaming was lifted, the phone companies were going to be using a ‘fair use’ clause. And once they detected no UK useage within a 60 day period, they would asssume you were overseas for an extended or permanent amount of time. And therefore your normal terms and conditions would not apply. I wondered if they would ‘notice’ - but I got a text message today, saying I had two weeks left under my normal contract terms. I had hoped I could keep my U.K. mobile number, which Inhave had forever, but I guess I will have to lose it now. Shame.

Tweet them - They are very helpful on Twitter. I use giffgaff nowdays and love the easy 'no contract' service.

Jan - thanks for that tip. Do you use GiffGaff all the time in Spain ? Are you here all the time ? Or do you manage to go back to the U.K. to keep within their Ts & Cs ?

I go back and forth but not sure how they would know (or care) if you pay online by credit card. I use a goody bag that lasts for 1 month at a time.
Brexit may change our reciprocal 'free' roaming though...not looking forward to that.

I saw this online when someone said they were going abroad for a year and wanted to keep their giffgaff Sim active:
Answer:
Your SIM Card will be disconnected unless, at least once every six months, your Account is used to:
a) make at least one call, SMS or MMS to another number (not including calls to emergency services or Member Services);
b) make at least one connection to the Internet;
c) make at least 4 received calls of more than 10 seconds;
d) make at least one airtime credit or Bundle purchase; or
e) receive Payback Points.
The best thing to do if you want to keep your number, is at least once inside each six month period, you log in to your account and purchase a £5 goodybag. Do this maybe three times over the year that you're away (to be sure you don't fall foul of the 6 month rule), and your SIM should stay active, and you've only 'wasted' £15. They should also e-mail you to warn you that your number is due for disconnection to prompt you to take action.
Not sure if this will help but maybe??
