Cheers on the advise re the fancy remote - no point wasting money on something I'll never use! :-)

Yes, using xbmc (free) on laptop/desktop computer will give you an idea if one of these boxes is for you. I have a box at home in the UK which cost under £50 to buy and I have it set up to get anything I want i.e. films, series', TV shows or whatever I want. It works OK on my UK TV but I do have the highest speed infinity broadband. I wouldn't use it as my primary viewing source though as, even with good speeds, it can be frustrating at times to get it to work perfectly and takes a bit of time to find the best film etc to watch. There may be something like 20 or 30 links/streams of a certain film and it can take a while to find one that will play, so not for the impatient viewer...LOL

When in Spain I take a mini-hard-drive loaded with shows, films etc and also go on my laptop for xbmc for certain things - It is possible to plug the laptop into the TV, with the correct lead, to watch on the bigger screen too but as I and others have said, it can be temperamental, especially in Spain, and buffering can be a problem - I think if we lived in Spain I might subscribe to a decent TV package or have a large dish to get a good TV service and use a 'box' as an extra viewing source, like I do at home in the UK.

XBMC - good for films / series. UK TV is lower picture quality than either satellite (by quite some margin) and also premium IPTV type services.

Live sports on XBMC have found mostly to be borderline unacceptable quality in a lot of instances (example) of live football & would not recommend if what specifically for that. Perhaps my standards are higher than average, but most of the time when i've checked, found the live sports to not be of the greatest quality.

I agree with Jan, these are better as a secondary service or to make your TV smarter than a smart TV - however there are compromises with free to air TV via the internet - it's not perfect, not comparable to satellite. We generally advise customers in areas that can use a satellite dish to do so as a first service - though in many areas of Spain and certain communities, this is not always possible.

Also there is a great deal of variation of boxes on offer, so you can get equipment from £50, but then you can also get equipment at 3 or 4 times this price, which is faster, better remote - 4K etc - so generally much like a PC, specification is also important as will affect overall use. There are also subscription based boxes, which are entirely different again - much more like a UK Sky box to use, simple - but a monthly cost attached.

We deal with a lot of IPTV queries - as far as Portugal & Germany. You can run an average IPTV system off a stable 2 - 2.5 Mbps, not HD though (5-6). Part of the issue locally is the microwave type rebroadcast services Teleast / Costa Blanca Broadband / Ole / Torresat speeds are quite variable, especially during peak viewing hours, so if on one of these services you have to be a little cautious. There are also low bandwidth IPTV systems that work down to 0.7Mbps, these are specialist subscription services, generally you will need a little more.

Apple TV box quite restrictive, slick - but you have to pay for content (unless jailbroken). These set top boxes with the correct applications will allow access to the same type of stuff, but for free.

Most powerful subscription free box on the market - can do up to 4K TV and is Octo Core. Fully configured. Many of the boxes being offered are either dual core or at best Quad.

In terms of wireless keyboard / mouse - while you do not need these for general TV navigation, when you start using the multimedia a little more, so updating or adding new software, web browsing, email or needing to type - then is worth an extra few euros.

Another option for those that already have satellite systems, there is now a 'hybrid' type system which offers the best of both worlds, satellite TV and all the free IPTV software and additional content of XBMC & more, all in a small aluminium set top box. Nice piece of kit with one of the best remotes i've seen, which can also be used as a Skype phone!
