New EU Roaming Laws
New EU Roaming Laws
by Babu » Thu May 11, 2017 7:34 pm
Just to let you know, the new EU mobile roaming regulations kick in from 15th June. This means that your UK calls/Text/Data package will (should) be inclusive of roaming within the EU. So need for a Spanish SIM is somewhat negated, however, a Spanish number calling you on a UK number would still be at international rates as far as I can tell.
Vodafone, O2 and BT Mobile have all stated their packages will start including EU roaming from 1st June. Best to check with your particular provider what their process/dates is/are.Good news, for the next 2 years at least

One more example of non elected bureaucrats making laws in Britain?
Well, let's hope that this law is adopted as UK law after Brexit

I received a text today from EE telling me I can use all my unlimited calls/data etc.in EU, I'm coming back to Quesada in September, hopefully to live....my income will be from rented property in UK so will still have UK bank account, will I still be able to keep EE as my provider, or will I have to change? So many things to consider, my brain hurts!!

Yes, I think you will be able to keep EE if you just don't tell them that you live abroad.
We moved to Spain 14 years ago, and we still have a contract with our UK provider. All we did was change our address to our son's house, then continued as before.
I have a dual-sim phone with both my UK sim card and my Spanish one in it, and I choose which card to use as I go along.

The EU legislation that scrapped EU roaming charges initially included a clause that said customers must be allowed to roam for up to 90 days in any 12 month period and for upto 30 days per trip. This these upper time limits have now been removed from the legislation, but it does still include a clause that allows telecoms companies to apply a fair useage cap that allows them to prevent the system from being abused.

You'll probably find that EE will block the use of your phone abroad after a while, but it might take years for that to happen.
However, I can't understand why someone living in Spain on a permanent basis would be able to manage without a Spanish mobile number?

I am not sure UK banks will accept a Spanish number for sending OTC's. I use a dual SIM, one for Spanish banks, one for UK.

We rely solely on a UK mobile number and have no difficulties whatsoever. I took money out of the bank recently and received a text before I left the bank. We use what's app and Facebook for free calls and messages and if anyone needs to call us in Spain, they do so.

You would receive a text because the number is registered at the bank but I dont think you can register a UK number with a Spanish bank for OTC.

Our network is 02 and we are on contract. These are the only phones we have and the number is registered with our Spanish Bank and are used in all dealings we have.
