New TV set up
New TV set up
by Tomg » Sun Dec 01, 2024 12:21 pm
Hi
I have treated myself to a new TV which has to be set up.
Can I set the current location to the UK on the set up page instead of Spain although we live here?
Is it any advantage ?
This is to get the UK TV apps or will I need a VPN.
I currently have IPTV on my old TV which will continue.
Forgot to say it is a HISENSE tv
Thank you.

The UK postcode will allow the TV to setup up TV channels for that area as the main BBC and ITV broadcasts
If you transfer the IPTV system [ you will need your user name and password ] across it should work on the new tv and I would certainly install a VPN

Setting up with a UK postcode will do nothing unless you have a dish to pick up UK Sky or Freesat.
Don't know about your TV in particular but VPN or not many now run on proprietary operating systems which will not allow the installation of apps such a iPlayer etc. Check your Hisense model here.

Even if iPlayer does works there is no guarantee that the other UK TV apps such as MY5 and ITV Hub will.

From my experience, how you set the tv up does not give you any special permissions for U.K. apps. It’s what you connect to for signal and additional free view box, and essentially a VPN. Without a VPN, all apps recognise it is not in the U.K., so such as iPlayer, 4, ITVX etc.. will not work.
For example, If you have a fire stick this will work on any basic tv, as long as you have internet for the fire stick to stream from. You can then also add more apps to it that would increase the number of tv channels you can view. Some need a subscription, others don’t, allowing you to view for free. If you were in the uk, you could view from whatever the fire stick has on offer, again subject to some needing a subscription. Problem with a fire stick from my experience, you are limited by the apps allowing you to view them in “Spain”.
A smart tv will allow you the same fire stick use as above. But with the added viewing via the apps loaded in the smart tv itself. Again you will need an internet connection.
Also with a smart tv, they have their own built in box for detecting channels provided through a satellite dish. So, if you don’t have an internet connection, but you do have a dish connected via cable to your smart tv, then you should be able to get channels this way too.
And if you have all of the above all connected at the same time, would give you several choices on how to view stuff, all on one smart tv.
Hope that helps.

From your mention of IPTV & VPN, I assume that you use the internet to access UK TV. If you're already paying for a VPN then I would think that you can use the same account on your new TV (most allow multiple devices). If not, try Smart DNS, this isn't a VPN but will allow you to access UK TV without the VPN encryption overhead. It simply changes your IP address to one in UK, or other country, to fool the TV service you're trying to access.
Setting the TV to UK will usually allow you to download UK apps like of iplayer via your TV. Well it did on my LG TV, if I put in my Spanish postcode I was restricted to Spanish tv apps.

If you use YouTube on your pad or phone . Just do a search for Android TV setup. It will show you what to do.

True but only in a generic way and without a meaningful EPG. When you do a channel scan on Astra 28deg you will get literally hundreds of stations from all over the world and will have to scroll through the whole list to find the handful of UK or English ones you actually want, it's a deeply frustrating PITA I can tell you!
You won't get Sky this way nor will you get Freesat as that requires a Freesat certified TV and you won't buy of those in Spanish shops.
An external IPTV box or Firestick with VPN (I concur with the Smartdnsproxy suggestion) are the way to go. I in fact use both.
