Satellite reception
Satellite reception
by Spongebob » Tue Apr 23, 2024 10:38 am
Hi
Another satellite tv question I'm afraid. I have a large dish and an HD Tv that the satellite feed goes direct into.
Of course BBC is not playing ball, I have retuned at least 3 times and though I get some BBC I have lost BBC4 and all BBC radio stations ??
(sadly I watch BBC4 a lot and listen to the radio, so this is a blow)
I live in Campoverde, so not in Jpegs / your area, (I mention Jpeg as he seems to know a lot and ssems to give helpful hints whenever people ask about this stuff) - but I am sure the issues are the same. Even after the retuning BBC breaks up sometimes (last nights thunderstorm we can ignore)
So - my questions are, what else can I usefully do?
I can retune again, but if the dish is not in optimum orientation will the signal just not be strong enough for the tv to load the BBC stuff?
I have had the dish for 7-8 years, is it likely that the LNB is getting past its "sell by" date?
How do I check signal strength, no obvious way in the tv settings
I do use astra 28.2E amongst others (the others are just in case, but I do not have sky or freesat receiver)
As of right now, I am waiting for signal to stabalise as BBC is breaking up badly, and I am assuming that if I retune now I could lose even more?
So - what steps am I missing? Is satellite a dieing format ( I suspect yes, but for now it ought to be ok)
I hope you can help
Thanks

Looks like you need a visit from a Satelite installer I would also buy a new LNB make sure it is HD format with 3D
Have you tuned the channels on the install menu on the TV
Maybe better to buy a new satelite reciever box they are only around 20 euros in Media mart Engal are doing one at 25 euros I have installed quite a few and they perform well
The tuner in the TV may be past its best and nor recieving a good HD signal

Hi Jpeg,
Thanks for your replies, here are my answers
yes I have retuned on the tv (many times) and still no luck (last time was this morning)
You may be right about an installer, I think I may have got as far as my knowledge may take me.
The TV is satallite enabled and only 6-7 years old and HD, have had BBC HD before inc BBC4, but it seems after the latatest BBC moving about I have lost them.
To be fair I can get BBC 1,2 and 3 but that is about it, and they are prone to signal loss (breaking up) most other channels seem to be ok.
Of course it could be the LNB or the dish may have moved, but I would have expected most other channels to be affected too, am I correct in that assumption?
I currently tune most astra sataliites 19.2E - 28.2E - 23.5E and 5B 31.5E _ I am guessing I don't need all of those, but was trying to cover all the bases.
So my next move, I think, is to buy one of the boxes you suggested (any particular one better than the others, in your opinion) I am going to La Zenia this week, so will go in Media Mkt there, as for the sky box, I have no sky account or card so may not be able to use that.
If that does not do it, then I think an installer is my next move.
It really is very frustrating, I did have all the BBC stuff, then while in the UK, I think there was another "upgrade" on the satellite by the BBC and now I am worse off, good isn't it.
Any way thank you so much for your help, would you know anyone in the Horodada area that is any good (better if they speak English too as my Spanish is not good enough to get that technical)

BBC channels have been HD for many years, and only in March 23 did the regions of BBC1 go HD.
"most other channels are ok"...so you are getting all the ITV HD channels?

Crucially you do not say what size dish you have.
HD channels are transmitted in a way they are weaker than SE channels, you may find that although your dish was the right size for the stronger SD channels, it is now slightly too small for the weaker HD channels.
But yes, your dish may also have moved. It only needs to move a few millimeters for it to move out of alignment and lose channels.

Are you saying you scan for UK channels on all four satellite settings? Which is pointless as UK TV is only on Astra 2 at 28 east. And scanning on other satellite may miss frequencies.
Unless you mean you have multiple dishes aligned to those other satellite locations?
Or multiple LNBs on the dish?
Or you have a motorised dish that picks up those other satellite locations - in which case you may find your dish is not "Locking" accurately enough for the Astra 2 satellite and the weaker BBC HD channels.

No "upgrades" on the satellite for over a year.
BBC changed to HD for all their regions of BBC 1 March 23. No other HD channel changes have happened since then.
The only thing they did this year was close the SD channels on Jan 6th (or 8th).

Hi
Ok, lots of helpful bits here, I will try to answer as best I can
On my channel list none of the ITV stations say HD after them. I also get channel 4 and 5 each though only seems to have one HD listing )ie all the more 4's etc do not have HD on the name)
Dish size - It is slightly elliptical at approx 1.2 x 1.4m
It has one LNB "gizmo" there with just one wire coming out of it.
the sat dish feeds direct into my TV and when I originally started this process I knew I needed astra, but not which one, so chose all of he ones on offer.
Would I be correct in assuming that the others are for Sky and Virgin, I get a lot of their channels in my lisings, but cannot decode them (as I am not a client of either)
As a background, When we took on this house, it was from Germans, so we asked Tien 21 to supply and fit a dish & box that would enable us to get UK tv, we still have that basic set up, though when I changed the tv, I found I could plug the sat direct into that.
We did have a fairly stable set up when we were last here in December, then on our return 2 weeks ago, we found none of the BBC channels worked, so retuned and promptly lost them, hence the call for help.
However....
As I have been trying various things since, the last retune I did I actually ticked some options on the asrta 28.2E - namely something called
Skip Scramble P.. (runs of the screen)
Network search
Blind Search
I have no idea what these mean, but thought I had nothing to lose, so ticked them and retuned.
Now I do have BBC inc BBC4 and BBC radio once more, so did those options mean something?
Now i have them again, I may not fiddle too much more. But... Jpeg kindly gave me a number to try and I may ask that guy to just check over the alignment and see if the LNB is working ok, might as well I think
I would be interested in your thoughts, and thank you if you do reply
As I have said before, your help is very much appreciated

On my channel list none of the ITV stations say HD after them.
So either your dish is too small to receive them, or your current dish and LNB are not aligned correctly. And as such you will no longer get ITV3 or ITV4 which are now exclusively HD. And you will struggle when ITV close down more of their sd channels if you cannot get any ITVHD channels now.
I also get channel 4 and 5 each though only seems to have one HD listing )ie all the more 4's etc do not have HD on the name)
C5HD is with all the other C5 channels, and on one frequency. And much easier to receive tham BBC and ITV HD channels.
C4HD London is on a much easier frequency to receive than the other 3 frequencies used for the other 5 C4HD regions. Hopefully this will change once C4 close some of their SD channels, freeing up room to move these 5 regions from their borrowed weak Sky frequency, to their own frequency.
E4, M4, amd Film4. C4HD is free. E4HD, More4HD Film4HD are subscription.
I originally started this process I knew I needed astra, but not which one, so chose all of he ones on offer.
Would I be correct in assuming that the others are for Sky and Virgin, I get a lot of their channels in my lisings, but cannot decode them (as I am not a client of either)
UK TV is on the astra 2 group, at 28 east. There are currently three satellites there , 2e, 2f and 2g. And all UK TV channels, be it from BBC ITV C4 Five UKTV, Discovery, Sky, great, Virgin, etc are spread across about 70 frequencies that are spread across those three satellite.
UKTV is not spread across the range of astra satellites (ie 1 2 and 3), as one dish would not be able to cope with signals from 28 23 and 19 east all at the same time.
Astra 1 mainly carries German, French and Spanish channels. Astra 2 UK. Astra 3 is mainly Dutch / Belgium channels.
We did have a fairly stable set up when we were last here in December, then on our return 2 weeks ago, we found none of the BBC channels worked, so retuned and promptly lost them, hence the call for help.
BBC HD channels have not changed since March 2023.
So if you had all these, then you should still have them.
Only BBC SD channels have closed down in January this year. And were removed from the satellite a few weeks ago. Hence why you probably lost these.
Skip Scramble - when doing a scan for channels it skips the scrambled channels
Network search - updates the freqeucny list in your receive with any new frequencies it finds on the satellite. If this is not checked then your receive simply scans the frequencies it has, and so will not pick up any newly activated frequencies.
Blind Search - scans everything. slowly.
Now I do have BBC inc BBC4 and BBC radio once more, so did those options mean something?
So sounds like your dish is right on the limit. Maybe a slight tweak, a new / better LNB may help...
