Satellite tv tuning
Satellite tv tuning
by Jillandsteve » Fri Jul 01, 2016 6:36 pm
i currently have my tv tuned to Astra 2 (28.2E) and have lost, for an unknown reason, a couple of channels, ie Food Network and NHK
Should I select a different satellite or is this the only one to really use?

There are some channels which disappear at odd times of the day because of the weather. The old sun up there tends to play a few tricks at certain times of the year as well.
That is the satellite you want but it's something we have to put up with unless you have a mahoosive dish to drag them in.
We get, for example, Drama and Yesterday in the morning, goes off in the afternoon and comes back late evening. Most of the channels that are affected are the weaker ones on the edge of the signal.
TV Tech will, I'm sure, be along to give you the real reason this happens.
We've just had our dish re-aligned and it has brought in some of the channels we were missing but others still a bit iffy.
We started off with a 1 m dish and all was fine until they changed it then upgraded to a 1.4m dish. Bit reluctant to fork out for a bigger one.

There are a few frequencies which when they have been moved around, simply are not received that well in the fringe location - most are o.k. though few high up the frequency range which are a little weak on the 1.4 - in reality not worth upgrading as not any of the main channels. Food network (and the +1 same frequency) does seem a little weak on the 1.4's.
Ultimately the 1.4's are the minimum requirement - so will get 90-95% all main channels, if not 100% of everything.

On a 1.8 Food network & food network + 1 should be o.k - Drama & Yesterday, still weak. Partial reception.

Hi Jillandsteve.
This morning I did notice a something. On the 29/6 Food network did not change frequency, but did change the FEC to 5/6 - which it the error correction rate. Looks like this could well have impacted the reception on the fringe locations.
I checked the Food network on a 1.8 yesterday afternoon and again this morning and reception does seem o.k on a a dish of this size.
TV's with inbuilt sat tuners can sometimes be a little limited - in terms of flexibility and also tuner performance. It may simply be a combination of factors, a weaker signal, TV which may not like the new FEC reading, or even a dish a tiny bit out of alignment / LNB - usually on a 1.8 you wouldn't notice - but clearly again, on edge of reception, minor differences either in the tuner, old cable, dish alignment or LNB, can make the difference.
Also not factored in localised interference on 'unknown' frequencies - which can mix things up further. Pockets of the expat areas where there are microwave transmission masts (mainly used for internet) are on unlicensed frequencies and not well monitored - can cause the odd frequency reception issue. This is why sometimes we see a little variation locally on a couple of the weaker channels.

Also - If you have a specific series you watch on Food Network - 9/10 times you can download the the entire series on the internet from sites like www.kat.cr or www.thepiratebay.se
