A Sky, Sky+, Sky HD, and Sky+HD box without a card will receive all the free channels (250 ish inc BBC ITV C4 Fives), with no subsciprtion.
But if you want to record on a Sky+box, then you need a card and monthly subsciprtion.
Which is where Freesat recording boxes come into play with their easy to use system, or an "off the shelf" box that usually records onto USB stick.
