"Tethering" a PAYG phone for internet access.
by ChrisTOPHER123 » Mon Jun 01, 2015 3:27 pm
I have a mobile PAYG phone which I can use to connect my tablet or laptop to in order to gain internet access. Does anyone have any idea how long I would get and how much it costs. I keep hearing about x amount of mb data but this means nothing to me. I would be using it for Skype or face time calls home while on holiday. As much advice and info as possible please.

If u do Skype and face calls is this with Apple ?and if so who are u with for your phone calls as I think they do use a lot of mb,s, "if" your phone is open or unlocked then get a moviestar card or bring a Three pay as u go from the UK when you are over in Spain.Or bring an open mifi with u from the UK and a card also then get BBand card here.

I think you need proper advice on this one as tethering can cost a fortune using a British phone even with 3mob you can now have standard cost calls to the UK but not standard costs for tethering so beware!! I think Spanish MIFI would be best but am not certain. Speak to someone who knows the facts.

You need a mifi with a mobile data card such as three.co.uk - I used a mobile phone sim but then it blocked me - if you have a mifi with a mobile data sim it allows to to connect up to to 10 separate phones / iPad / laptop. You would buy 500 mb for emails, google searches, Facebook but for FaceTime etc you perhaps need 1 / 5 / 10 GB which you pay for either monthly or Pay As You Go

Last time I tried this in reverse - IE using a Spanish mobile with 4G in the UK and tethering to my ipad. Using only a little, mainly emails / web browsing - no video calling - I ended up adding €50 to my phone bill for 3 or 4 days.
When i've tethered in Spain - Yoigo 4G unlimited, done on the odd occasion, but only mainly again for email / web browsing and added nothing to bill.
Difficult to give any figures as so variable. Would suggest if you are considering this, keep it to a minimum - avoid video streaming / Skype / Youtube / TV - and stick to what is really needed - otherwise you may see bill soar. Will also depend on how much data you start with.
If you do want to do the video calling, you can also use the free wifi in local bars or Macdonalds.
