THE TRUTH BEHIND WHAT YOUR INTERNET PROVIDERS GET UP TO!

THE TRUTH BEHIND WHAT YOUR INTERNET PROVIDERS GET UP TO!

Postby Paul - TV Techie » Wed Oct 23, 2019 7:38 pm

Would you like to understand what your internet provider can do to your connection? Much more to a speed test than meets the eye. If you ever have internet issues, this you need to read this link.

https://www.televisiontechnology.eu/ins ... uides-iptv (it's not specific for IPTV - for all internet-connected devices). WHAT THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW.

The point about using a wired connection as opposed to WiFi is well made however with so many these day having only smartphones or tablets it's unfortunately not an option.

For speed testing I've long advocated the use of test files as they are known factors and generally not subject to the sort of machinations mentioned.

For a long time I used anti virus signature files which you could be sure were hosted on fast servers but then I found

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/download

and now use files from there.

Agreed - that comment more was aimed at TV type boxes or 'permanent' devices - moreso than of course portable devices - ipads/smartphones, which have to use WiFi or a mobile data network - these are also a little more flexible as you can move them, whereas something plugged into the TV, usually you do not.

Another option for the fixed devices, where cabling is not a possibility is 'home network plugs' - which send the network/internet signal around a single mains electric loop. Better than WiFi and removes range type issues.

I think the download file website you mention, is definitely a slightly different angle, in terms of the usual test - but it still leads me back to the same point - is it shows no indication of instability or throttling - if going on 'as and when' suits the provider.

I think ultimately this is something we have to live with, as big companies if 'up to something' do not want Joe or Jane average knowing what they are up to - i've seen a good few examples of this and caught Telefonica red handed myself doing it - and I proved it to their technician!

I also have seen a little 'from the other side' as up until recently we partnered with an internet company & had our technicians dealing with the head office, so was quite interesting to hear some of the 'other side of the story'.
