Vega Fibre... Slow speeds

No good running speed tests or guaranteeing best speeds if your device is not connected to the router by an Ethernet cable. Wireless connections to a router can be adversely affected by other equipment and physical structures within a building. Ethernet cables are available in various lengths, ready to connect, from Chinese mercas.

Harry, total agree that there will be some loss using a WiFi connection and to expect the published 300mbps is totally unrealistic. However, I sit 2m from the router and when allowing for WiFi loss should expect greater than 4/5 Mbps.

I have been into the office this morning and have been told an engineer will look into this.

I will post an update when I have one.

I've also seen a few issues in the last couple of weeks with Telfy - devices not connecting, a couple of instances of completely dropping off. Didn't seem to last too long, but definitely a glitch or 3 in the last couple of weeks.

These speeds all these companies quote are 'pie in the Sky' - it's purely for marketing. They have systems which detect speed tests and can ping back favourable responses (or some do).

ISP's buy in data / bandwidth - and like most businesses, it's a juggling act. Often because we live in areas of transient populations (holiday homes/tourism) - I think a lot of the ISP's don't buy enough bandwidth, which is why when the tourism starts, the internet problems start picking up.

I've done a speed test of 200Mps and at the same time seen a box fall over which uses 2Mbps! how? ISPs can see and throttle each connection individually, meaning a speed test is USELESS - as well as doesn't test stability - which will also trip up other devices.

ISP's do have the odd issue & it is very difficult to prove this at times - as you don't have the tools to...so if you have ongoing issues recommend testing your devices on another internet connection (or your mobile phones data hotspot) & that way you can make some tests before speaking to the ISP - as when they try deny it - you can say, i've tested on another connection - So I KNOW its an internet issue.

5g and fibre are two entirely different things!

If by 5g you mean the 5ghZ band WiFi frequently works on in conjunction with 2.4ghZ then that too is a different thing.

In terms of the much vaunted 5g mobile phone service 5g simply stands for 5th. generation and is not an indication of the frequency bands it works on.

You are absolutely correct, I should have been cleared when talking about 5ghz.

I was told by the installer that the 2.4ghz had greater distance and the 5ghz had greater speed but it's distance was limited.

I'm realistic enough not to expect to download at 300mbps but I still maintain that 5mbps is very slow when connected to 5ghz.

I previously had a 100mbps connection and constantly achieved about 80mbps. I only upgraded to 300mbps because it was pretty much the same price. I have a neighbour still on 100 and his speeds are greater then my 300 connection.

UPDATE...

After my visit to the office yesterday my speeds have increased significantly.

216mbps is definitely better than 5mbps.
