If you have trouble with the renfe site try loco2.com we use them for trains from Uk to Alicante.

Either try on line or a travel agents as we did & ended up with a first class ticket with free food, papers, (soft) drinks that was cheaper the tourist class ticket!! Very fast, comfortable & spacious to go!! Madrid Station is very large & efficient with plenty of taxis if you want them. Have a good trip.

Alicante to Madrid Train.
We went last week, took the 1100am ALVIA train, which arrives in Madrid at 1349.
This is NOT the High Speed train.
We went Preferente Class (1st) both ways (not a lot of difference on ALVIA trains) the cost was 49,10€ each.
On the way back we decided to take the High Speed train, this left Madrid at 1045am and arrived in Alicante at 1310, the cost was 67€ each.
In Preferente the seats are more plush and the distance between seats is bigger. 230 volt supplies to all seats for PC’s etc..
Coffee was served.
A selection of Spanish newspapers are offered and a small snack for lunch. A small cheese roll and serrano ham roll with tea, coffee or soft drink. Wine is served and to finish a Whisky, gin or choice of beverage. All inclusive.
A video was played “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” with English language (if you switched your earphones to the correct choice)
The difference between the seating in Turistica and Preferente is hardly noticeable.
A very relaxing and comfortable way to travel.
The RENFE website is a nightmare, I gave up and let Viajes Rosa Tours take the strain.
There does appear to be quite a difference in fares across the spectrum and the usual concessions are available (Seniors with a rail card 6€, get 10% off etc..)
We left our car in El Cortes Ingles underground car park – cost 42€ - 4 days, last time we left it at the RENFE station and it was 60€.
