So Who's Leaving?
by marcliff » Fri Mar 20, 2020 9:36 pm
OK, another new topic.
On the UK news tonight they were at a Spanish airport (didn't catch which one) and stating that expats are trying to leave Spain in droves.
Is that actually true? Weren't they just those who visit here and are trying to get home rather than those who live here and trying to escape?
How many permanent residents do we have that are desperate to leave? I know it's awkward to get out and ask people as we can't socialise at the moment but I haven't seen anyone around here who is desperate to get out of Spain apart from those who just come over to their second homes and want to go back to their jobs or main homes.
On the contrary, 2 couples I have spoken to who are visitors said they would rather stay here in the sunshine (bit ironic at the moment) and stick it out.
Are you, or any ones you know, actually upping sticks and leaving if you or they live here on a permanent or even semi-permanent basis?
I know the news programmes try to big these things up but just wondering if it is leaving the sinking ship time for some or just a bit of no news is good news.

On that point, me too. It's just that the cameras panned around and referred to all those jamming up the airport were expats (permanent residents) who were desperate to leave which I thought was a bit odd.

It will be visitors ... Though perhaps with the imminent closure of campsites, caravan sites etc there might be a numbers of "under the radar" people suddenly having to up sticks. The media like to sensationalise but have been wondering the fate of all those "bargain Brits in the sun" folk on campsites, are those sites being closed or allowed to stay open? If they are being closed there could be people with no other option but to try to get back to UK.

Do you think they might have been, under the radar, ‘ExPats”? Like you, my circle of friends are here and, here to stay

We are staying.
I know where I would rather be should I get ill - and it is not in a UK hospital.
Anyway getting up to see the sun every morning makes you feel better.
The panic buying looks far worse in UK than here.
Yes I think I will definitely stay here even with lockdown

2 families near me have gone back to uk at short notice. Don't know why but now uk is tightening up on freedoms I suspect the attraction will wane.

I can imagine some with elderly parents going back to be with them and if without accommodation of their they can stay with them without breaching social distancing rules.
Equally grand parents returning to support their families, perhaps in child care so the parents can continue to go out to work, but a headlong mass exodus no, surely there are not enough flights available for that anyway.
Certainly amongst our circle of friends and acquaintances I've not heard of anybody leaving or planning to.
