We went there yesterday - fabulous! We live near Daya Vieja, so we travelled via the dual carriageway around San Fulgencio, signposted Elche, which bypasses Dolores. We parked in the underground car park at Centro de Congresso, Calle Porta de La Morera, Elche 03203. We then walked to the Tourist Information Centre, opposite the Basilica de Santa Maria (about 10 minutes) - there is parking there too, but we didn't fancy negotiating the city centre! From the Tourist Information centre (they speak English), you can take the El Trenet (tractor-drawn tourist train), which leaves every hour, on the hour - Eu 3.50 for Adults, Eu 2.30 for children and OAPs. The train takes you on a 45 minute tour of the city's palm parks, all of which are municipally owned, except for Hort del Cura, which is privately owned and is an impressive botanical garden, including many rare palms and cacti. You can disembark from the train at Hort del Cura and re-join a later one. The Palm Museum is opposite Hort del Cura, so you can do this at the same time. You can also walk the palm route, but we had my 89 year old father with us, so the train was a better option and we all agreed that it was excellent value for money, especially as it includes a recorded commentary, in Spanish, English and French. Have fun!
