Do you think that enough is done to alert holiday makers to the risks - without scaring them completely??

Probably not Sandra but those that let-out their houses for holiday lets should really leave notes about locking doors and grills and not leaving valuables in sight of open windows in the same way they would tell people about dustbins etc. We have only had family stay, without us being here, very occasionally but I have some printed notes explaining these things.

This can happen anywhere and does but holiday-makers while having fun can be complacent and unfortunately these opportunist thieves know that....all the tricks of the trade comes to mind!

I picked this leaflet up at the town hall. Thought it might be helpful. Click on each page to enlarge if necessary:

I haven't seen those leaflets before, Jan, but think that they are a good idea - especially for owners to leave in rented houses.

Dot, it just shows how quickly things can happen. You need to be on your guard all the time, and to think ahead!

That's very sad Dot but shows how possibly just locking the front gate may have made a difference. The thief could have seen the opportunity but may not take a chance by climbing over the gate -They seem to look for the easiest options. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but there are small measures we can take to help avoid these kind of opportunist crimes.

The leaflets are in the town hall, Sandra, and as you say could be helpful for people to leave in their houses.

There was a lady in the La Laguna hotel bar last night talking to the police that someone had stolen her handbag, I dont know the details but she was extremely upset!

I cannot remember the name of the commercial centre, may be Lo Marabu. It is where Fontanals Solicitors and Flabelos are, but it all comes under Rojales. We have been going to the Spanish cafe around the corner behind the shops, for quite a few months on Sunday mornings. The cafe is called El Faro. Sadly on July 1st. once again we were there around 11am and there was just one other table with customers, quite a few, men women and children. We sat near them as it was the only other table with shade. Hubby and I sat at a table for 4 people so I put my large handbag on a spare chair close to me and it was in my sight, closed, EXCEPT when the waitress came out to say the tostadas would be a bit longer as they'd run out of bread?¿?¿ A short while later the people on the other table left. My husband paid the bill, we went home, and it wasn't until that afternoon I realised my handbag was missing several things - One digital camera, One Mobile and ONE PURSE!! It had been rifled from almost under our eyes - very very clever. Only those 3 things taken, other stuff, notebook, make up bag, small pack of tissues remained. We had parked right by the cafe and as we left I put my newspaper in my bag, so didn't realise it should have weighed a lot less. This is the time of year, although it beggars belief that it happened somewhere where we had been going for a long while. Nasty people, hell's not good enough but, the only way to deal with them is to be extra vigilant. As hubby said - "at least we weren't hurt"!! Just hope it's not going back to how it used to be here years ago.

So sorry to hear about that - must be awful.

El Faro is by a roundabout, and I have often been there for meals. It is difficult to know how to protect your belongings. Many times I have resorted to a money belt, and just carried non valuables in a separate bag. The more that I have mentioned about opportunist thieves, to my friends, the more I have heard this type of story.

I suppose an across the body strapped bag and not taking it off when sitting down may be best. Also as Sandra says not carrying valuables or much money in it too, if possible. However, this can happen anywhere & in the UK too. We live near London and you need to be very aware there. It's just a case of always being aware...it's a shame we have to but sadly it's life these days.
