Bilbao versus Santander

Bilbao versus Santander

Postby Deborah Saunders » Wed Sep 26, 2018 6:52 pm

Advice please on a good driving route from ferry, and whether Bilbao or Santander is best to come to. We would like a scenic route and prepared to stop overnight a few times to see the best places. Thank you

The ports are about 65 miles apart ,so not much difference, between them in time ,I have done various routes from both ports ,not using toll roads using sat nav ,very scenic route from Bilbao gong up in to the mountains ,always end up good no via Madrid ring road though,we don’t stop overnight, takes us about 10 hours stopping half hour at a time ,have got dogs so we stop about 4 times

We have used both Bilbao and Santander. from both Portmouth an Plymouth. You need to go online with Brittany Ferries, and look at their timetables and costs, as this may have a major input to your decision. eg if you sail from Plymouth to Santander, it is only 1 night at sea, but you don't get out of Santander harbour until about 13:00, which restricts how far you travel that day. At the other end of the scale, if you travel Portsmouth to Bilbao, it can be 2 nights at sea, but you get out of Bilbao harbour at about 08:30, giving you a full days travel. I personally prefer Portsmouth to St Malo, and have 3 overnight stops driving down through France and Spain.

We did the Bilbao route earlier this year and the water was very rough between there and Santander. The wife spent the early part of the journey laying down in bed, so we won’t be using Bilbao again.

Santander or Bilbao, really depends on your travel date & sailing times. You can save on overnight accommodation by setting off from the UK in the afternoon/evening and arriving in Spain in the morning.

See ...... https://about-spain.net/travel/map.htm

Our usual route is Bilbao - Burgos - Madrid (ring road) - Albercette and A31 toward Alicante. Quick & easy route takes about 9 hours. I do recommend the toll road between Bilbao and Burgos. It's about €20 and avoids the narrow steep roads where you usually get stuck behind a lorry or three. However, if you've plenty of time, it is scenic.

A more scenic route via Zaragoza & Teurel

Have a play with ....https://www.viamichelin.com/web/Routes You can use the options tab to set tolls/no tolls and work out you total cost including fuel.

Enjoy the trip.

Bilbao is an amazing city. You should spend a few nights there for sure. The food in the North is incredible.

You did the Bilbao route and the sea was rough between there and Santander? Why would you be going to Santander if you're doing the Bilbao route?
If you mean the sea was rough between there and Portsmouth, do you think the Bay of Biscay would have been calmer if you'd come another way?
I think it had more to do with the weather that day and not the route.
