Bringing my car to spain
Bringing my car to spain
by FrankAlan » Thu Feb 20, 2020 8:46 pm
We are moving to Spain in the next month or so and would like to bring my car as it is only just over a year old. We have our NIE no's and intend to take up residentcy , can anyone advise about the procedure I need to follow to do this legally I have heard of ways to do this but they seem to be a little bit dodgy and I want to do this correctly.
Many thanks
Many thanks

Hopefully, you haven’t previously registered on the Padron.
You have two months from first registering on the Padron during which time you can import your vehicle without paying import tax, under the personal possessions import scheme.
You need to have owned the vehicle for at least 6 months prior to moving to Spain.
Contact Graham or Leigh at Spanish Number Plates, and they will give you more info and a breakdown of the costs. You can also take a look at the FAQ section of their website:

It's not an exact science this is it? Spanish used car prices are a bit pricey and with silly mileage & yet if you bring in a car from UK, as well as it being RHD, they could be subject to import tax & I have heard from a friend of 30 years on CB (although not 100% sure if what she has told me is correct) that the Spanish have some sort of equivalent to Glass' guide, whereby they can charge 10% of the vehicles original value when it was new? Not sure if this is an old wives tale (no offence to wives here by the way), I would consider bringing in a RHD because they can be half the price of a Spanish vehicle and also far less mileage. Any thoughts anyone, thank you.

Slightly different question on this subject.
Bringing a car from the uk and registering it in Spain if you are not a resident.
does this qualify for import tax ?
Thanks George

Non residents can bring a car over. No import tax to play if registered within about 3 months as far as I remember. As above contact Graham or Leigh, highly recommend. Superb service from them.

Yes it does incur import tax. The only way to avoid this is if you are moving to Spain and declare the car as a personal possession. This has to be done within 2 months of first signing on the padron.

Hi Guys
I am a non-resident with a Spanish holiday home Looking to transfer my UK registered car to spanish registration and I am having EU approved bulbs and reflectors fitted in UK, since I am travelling through Spain for 3 hours in the dark. , however before the Spanish registration Cant take place I have been informed that I need to replace the headlight units
Questions
1. Is this true or can I just get the headlights realigned?
2. Can anyone recommend contact details of someone in Quesada or Guardamar that can do the necessary work on the headlights so I can arrange it before I travel to Spain?
Regards.

What are "EU approved bulbs and reflectors"?
If it's a European car then even in RHD those should already be to EU standards and bear a CE mark. If not and it's say a 'grey' import, or worse from the US, then you need to think very hard about bringing it over at all as it could prove both time consuming and ruinously expensive to bring up to EU standards, if indeed even possible.
Very few cars have headlights which can be properly switched between RH & LH drive, typically what adjustment there may be just flattens the dipped beam to avoid dazzling and that's not sufficient for the Spanish ITV test although some have reported passing despite that.
Even ignoring rip off merchants changing headlights can be a very costly exercise sometimes running into 4 figures so before handing the whole job over to a garage check out the cost of the lights and if necessary buy them yourself and just use a garage to fit them.
