Car costs

Thanks for the info. I will do some research.

Part of me thinks having a car there is convenient and more akin to the general split lifestyle - another thing taken car of that is ready and waiting for whenever you jet over. However, there is then the airport parking cost, the overpriced second hand car cost, the insurance, tax, repairs etc to worry about. On the other hand, whilst cars are expensive to buy in Spain, hire cars are dirt cheap. It just feels a bit, well, "holiday" instead of a house/car waiting for me the other end of the plane.

I know exactly what you mean about feeling more holiday than home from home.
