Car flooded and insurance etc,
Car flooded and insurance etc,
by Andrea Murphy » Sun Apr 21, 2019 12:01 pm
Hi, Some advice please.
We have been caught out in our car in the recent Gota Fria.
The car engine was been flooded and died on us on the evening of Friday 19th April, two days ago - brought home with the car on the back of the Grua from the insurance as by then the water was waist high.
I think it has been classed as a National Disaster but not sure. Has anybody had anything like this happen to them? Do the insurance cover you for this sort of thing?
Also can anybody recommend a good car hire as it looks as though we will be without a car for a while as the garages do not open until Tuesday [due to the Easter Bank Holiday] to sort the car out and they will probably be overloaded with other cars with the same problem.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Can't advise re the insurance , but local car hire people ( based quesada) here and there car hire ( run by Peter and Carol Kennedy) might be able to help if they haven't got all their cars out ( think they have a fleet of about 35). Email [email protected] phone 649173739 They specialise in local hires ( when people don't want to drive to/from airport, they bring car to/ collect it from your accommo and do associated (legal) airport transfer.

Firstly, it hasn't been a Gota Fria, simply lots of rain caused by a depression over this area. I have been through a couple of Gota Frias and you would know the difference when it comes (usually in October time with a very cold blast of polar air and large hailstones).
However, it has been unusual to have the rain last this long.
You show your location as Torrevieja so it would be a bit far to come to get a Quesada car.
Coys car rental in Torrevieja always comes highly recommended with no hidden charges. They are closed now but open tomorrow from 10 to 2 pm (Easter Monday) and the phone number is 966 702 816.
You will, of course, need to contact your insurance company to see if you are covered under that. It has been mentioned that there is a "national emergency fund" to claim from but not sure if this will cover it. In either case you'd need to go through your insurance company to find out.

Thinking about your problem. If, as you say the water only came halfway up your car it may not have entered the engine via exhaust and air filter. It’s possible that when the sun comes out the drying process will start and if you haven’t tried to start it, change the oil and spray WD 40 over the electrics and give it a go. What does the panel think?

Thanks for all the advice. Now have a car hire being delivered today sometime. Will have to wait until Fords open tomorrow to sort out our own car, if they are able to sort it out that is. Same with the insurance, to make a claim they are not open until tomorrow after the bank holiday. However, thank you all for taking the time to answer my queries, all good advice as usual.

Hi, it's me again, sorry to trouble you all but somebody may know the answer to this one! My Car insurance company [and I am fully comprehensive insurance] runs out this Friday 30th April. The car was in the flood on Friday 19th April and my car insurance company now tell me that they will not pay out after 30th April as the insurance will have finished and I have not chosen to continue with their company. I have told them that I was fully comprehensively insured with them on Friday 19th April and that therefore they should cover me. Anybody ever heard of anything like this before, AND can they actually refuse to pay out if the car is not fixed before end of this month. After all it was an Easter holiday and their offices for reporting a claim were closed until Tuesday 23rd April. I await hearing from you, thanks in advance for any help/advice.

I have never heard of anything like that and I had my own insurance brokers for over 30 years, I’m not sure about Spanish insurance companies, but it sounds like sour grapes because you are not renewing with them. The contract you have with them is an annual contract so in real terms the policy would expire on the 30th and it’s then up to you to renew it or not, so I don’t understand why they are saying they won’t pay until after the policy expires, would they have paid out sooner if you renewed? Don’t forget to tell your new insurance that you have had a claim.

Hi Lockey57, thanks for your speedy advice above. Just as I thought, sour grapes. However, it now seems that the Consortium are covering all the cars that were in the flood damage in our area, or so our car insurance tell me. They have told me to contact the Consortium myself [have given me the details]. I told them to contact the Consortium on my behalf as they are my Insurers and it is with them that I am insured. They have agree to do this. Have sent them all the information they needed and had confirmation that they have received it. My friends who were in similar situations two years ago tell me that this is what happened to them with their car and the Consortium paid the money directly into their bank accounts. Will have to wait and see. Trying to contact the Consortium myself but do not seem to find a time when their English speaking person is there. Will keep at it. Telling my new insurance company that I have had a claim sounds good advice, does that make my insurance go up?
