Car hire and deposits

Some advise please, my family was planning to come visit in May. Due to Corona they decided to postpone the trip. They reserved a car with a “local” company. (Won’t ñame unless pm) paid a 40 euro deposit to confirm reservation. Nowhere on their site or contract does it state that it is non-refundable. They refuse to return the 40 euros. Cancellation was made last week so well enough over two months ahead. Anyone here know the rules and laws about this when the company does not state the information they later apply. Cancellation policies vary and some companies make a point of advertising "free cancellation" within x days.

Was the booking direct with the company or through an agency, you might find the policies on cancellations differ.

Check the T&C's again.

I’ve read the T&C several times and it states nowhere about deposit being non-refundable. Nowhere in the communication from asking of availability to confirming with deposit was it stated. Not until reservation was cancelled we were told they would not return monies paid. Booked directly with the company.

If deposit paid with credit card contact card company to sort out. Name and Shame Hire Company to warn others.
