car insurance in UK for ex pats

By your definition even a hotel would be "somewhere you can reside"!Paul Uden wrote:'Residential' as in somewhere you can reside rather than, for example, commercial. It's nothing to do with where you pay taxes. The Keith Michaels insurance is specifically for non-resident British people with a UK residential address.

Mine is not a legal definition. You could reside in a tent or a caravan too, neither of which would be suitable either. It's just nothing to do with tax residency and the company concerned will advise the OP what they are happy with. Mine are happy that I own a second home there and my car spends most of the year locked its garage.

I’m with Darro on this one, when it comes to defining ‘residency’ it’s far too simplistic to say that where you reside is simply where you lay your head for a few weeks!
If you are a Spanish resident, you cannot claim to have residency in the UK just because you have a UK address. When insurers ask for your ‘residential’ address, it’s most certainly not where you flop for a month or so every now and then, it’s where you are domiciled for tax purposes.
I’m sure there are brokers who can ‘arrange’ cover but I’d be very concerned about the outcome of any claim.

"it’s where you are domiciled for tax purpose" No, I'm sorry but residency has nothing to do with tax.

This is not about tax residency. If it was you would both be correct. This is about car insurance. The insurer is happy that the car is kept at my second home in the UK. That's all that matters to me. The OP can ask for themselves too if they have any concerns. This is not an issue for debate, I have a policy which states I am a Spanish resident and it also gives my UK address where the car is garaged. We're supposed to be helping the OP find an insurer not acting as amateur lawyers. Keith Michaels is one option and they can also try Insure2Drive as suggested by jpeg. Both offer to insure 'expats' in this situation or perhaps they are just lying to me and all their other customers. If I wanted to deceive a traditional UK insurer about my 'residency' it would certainly be a lot cheaper that's for sure, but risky. For that matter selling my car would be cheaper or parking it at my son's house and letting him insure and drive it most of the time. These are also options open to the OP, but they asked for details of potential insurers which they now have.

How useless does that make uk insurance when you think the car is insured in Spain and virtually anybody can drive it

Couldn't agree more.
Can't say for all EU countries but the Spanish model is very common, if not the norm in many of them, Germany and France that I know for certain, making UK (once again) the odd man out.
It seems to work too as out of curiosity I plugged my details into Go Compare as a UK resident and UK licence holder and for the exact same car I have in Spain for which I pay €303 the quotes there ranged from £492 all the way up to over £1000!
My last word on the question of UK insurance is to specifically and with total honestly ask the actual insurer or underwriter and not rely on a 3rd party broker who only wants the business and your money.
Same goes for any insurance not just motor.
