Car Key Not Working

Car Key Not Working

Postby 1918johnh » Sun Mar 13, 2022 10:30 am

Hi, my spare car key has stopped working.
It will open the car and switch ignition lights on but the car will not turn over.
I presume it is not disarming the immobiliser as the master key works fine.
Can anyone tell me if the key needs a new battery or reprogramming, I cannot see a way of opening the key as per the attached photo. Any recommendations for who could repair it.

Car: Ford Fusion 2007

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

The Ford dealership? When a similar thing happened to my Nissan a while back, the dealer replaced the battery and charged me €6 for doing so including price of the battery. He used a special tool for opening the key fob. You could do it with a thin knife or scalpel but could damage it. The dealership had an odd shaped plastic one for doing it.

Probably best to change the battery as a first step. You can usually find videos on YouTube showing you how to do this properly. Just enter your car make in the YouTube search for car key battery replacement. Good luck!

Hi there if my brain is working your spare Fusion key does not have any buttons if that is the case it will not have a battery inside. If no buttons then that pic up shows has a red plastic removeable cover and insde will be a chip if when you ease out the red bung the small grey chip does not come out then you need to go to your local ford dealer to put in a new chip and reprograme.
However if a small grey chip falls out reinsert the chip and you can reprograme the spare key with your origoinal master key. Let me know and I will post how to reprograme your key.

Hi, thank you for your replies.
No success with removing the chip from the key, so think I'll have to go to main dealers.

Hi, there the red plastic bung should ease out with a small screwdriver and the chip is very small it looks like a small piece like lead in a pencil. Before you give up try this insert the master key and turn the ign on for 4 sec then remove and put the other key in and do the same then give it a few secs with both keys out and put back spare car should start. If the car doesn't start you have lost the chip and it's off to the dealer. you have got to give it a try before you give up go on you know you want tooooo.

Hi again. Tried your suggestion Solwayiceman without success. "But"
I did try a hybrid technique taken from several internet posts, with limited success.
Turned master key on and off about 5 times and heard an alarm, Inserted faulty key and turned ignition on successfully.
This works fine until you wait a while and try to use the key again, which then fails.
Also there is a red light permanently flashing when the faulty key is used which is not present with the master key.
I gave it a go and it was like the Parsons Egg, good in parts.
The plot thickens.

That light means that the spare key has lost the chip as your spare key doesn't have buttons then there cannot be a battery inside most spare keys from ford were like this up till 2010. So you had a try and at least you found another way around it. Another tip is if you hold the master key near the spare key while the spare key is in the ign the spare key will work on starting the engine as the ign barrel senses the chip from the master key.
