Channel tunnel to Ciudad Quesada

Channel tunnel to Ciudad Quesada

Postby apricorncup17 » Sat Nov 05, 2022 6:03 am

My friend and her chap are travelling by car with their two small dogs within the next week from Uk to Spain. I have done this trip about 8 or 10 times myself. Can anyone recommend a route (avoiding Paris) and which has pet friendly hotels en route. I know Formule 1 hotels are cheap and cheerful, but when I came last year, I was driving a truck, so could only manage 56 mph and it took us into the fourth day, left Uk Friday and stayed in Calais late Friday night, arriving in Algorfa, Monday evening, so three overnight stops with our pet. She seems to think they will be here late on Saturday, after setting off on Thursday (I don’t know their setting off time yet). Has anyone done a similar route recently and would you recommend any places to stay en route which could be helpful? Thanks in anticipation.

Have done the trip a number of times with our Springer Spaniel. From Calais we normally head to Rouen, stop overnight in Alencon. Next day via Bordeaux down to St Jean de Luz. Overnight there then next day via San Sebastian, Zaragoza and Valencia to Quesada. Normally leave on a Thursday and arrive Saturday. I use the motorway and toll roads the whole way. I know plenty of people try and save a few euros by avoiding the toll roads. I have tried it and for me it doesn't work. Tolls are around 120€ for the whole trip. Avoiding them takes longer and is a tiring drive by comparison. France is better for stopping and excising the dogs, we try and avoid the main service stations and us the picnic areas. Many hotels accept dogs in both France and Spain, we always use B&B Hotels, cheap and convenient. We have a plug in cool box and load up with sandwiches and drinks and stop when it suits us, not where the services are. Also food for the evening to eat in the hotel rather than a restaurant with the dog. Hope this helps

We used to do this route twice a year for several years with our dog. We stayed at Premiere Classe hotels which are dog friendly and have en suite rooms. We normally stopped at Dreaux and Pau on the way down.
However since Covid we have been using Brittany Ferries Portsmouth to Santander. The ferry cost is approximately £300 more than the cross channel but with no hotels or tolls and saving on around 750 miles in fuel it is similar in cost and much less stressful.

If you do a google maps there is route via Rouen Tours etc. I use B&B and try and do it one stop. I stop at B and B in Bordeaux

Its great as you have external door for dogs in and out and a buffalo grill 200m away. You can walk the dog around the industrial estate not the best Ok
I pay the tolls the drive is long enough and the facilities on the motorways on the toll roads are great for dogs, green spaces to walk them. Clean toilets.
