Cost of having a car in Spain

Cost of having a car in Spain

Postby Iancorker » Tue Jun 08, 2021 4:10 pm

We intend to stay in Spain for a few months each year. What is the cost of holding a car in Spain? Road Tax, MoT, Insurance, servicing etc?

Road tax in Rojales for my 4x4 petrol 1.6 SUV is €42.60 per year. (It's classed as a municipal tax here so each town will have a different rate).
MoT (or IVA) is done after 4 years then every 2 years until the car is 10 years old then every year. Cost depends on type of car but around 30 to 40 euro (ish).
Insurance around the same as you would pay in UK. Obviously depends on the exchange rate.
Servicing a lot cheaper. I paid €113 for a full service last July (just reminded me, due again next month).

Remember it has to be insured at all times as there is no SORN here.

As Marcliffe says above, although my Road Tax (Suma) for my Sandero Stepway under Guardamar is €20. Many Insurers/Brokers allow your NCD from UK against Insurance in Spain, (some don't).
If you use Airport Parking then that's another €250 - €500 for an annual account depending on outdoor/under cover/indoor option.

if its for several weeks at a time, 6 weeks plus for example, my suggestion would be to drive across if you dont mind a two day journey adventure. i believe there are still underhand dealings ongoing with some hire firms that can leave some innocent customers out of pocket. having your own car rules that out. you can only drive one car at time a time anyway. just get a uk insurance that gives ample eu cover. this is what we do for our 3 or 4 trips we make each year. just a thought for you anyway.

Have a look at the Seguro car share scheme. I found that excellent before I took the plunge and bought a car. Delivered to you at the airport and pre-agreed rates plus you can select the size of vehicle that best suits that particular trip (large 7 seater or small 3 door hatchback or anywhere in between). For the cost of just the annual parking with the same company at the airport you would have the best part of 2 months car hire, let alone the cost of buying a car, servicing it, insuring it and taxing it. I only bought as I found myself on longer stays than usual.

I tried but can’t get into Seguro’s site. Looks like they are no longer working.

Works fine for me?

https://seguroparking.com/

Be worth dropping them an email. I don't think the car share scheme made the website but they will email you full details and prices etc.

We [normally] do the same but travel through France take longer we consider it to be a holiday when traveling in France and Spain, when wi get here then the are 'living in Spain' spending between 4 and 13 weeks in Spain we travel on an Irish passport so [not travelled yet this year but] expect no problems.

Thanks. How much does it cost you in crossing charges, fuel, tolls and accommodation? And how long does the drive take, once in France?

For us, the whole journey from Calais to near Torrevieja takes around 27 hours, includes several 20ish minute stops, and a park up during the night for around 5 hours. I don’t use any tolls for major reasons. We discovered to use all toll wherever we happened to meet them on route, total cost around 180euro, which was a heck of shock. Also it apparently saves approx 4 hours off the journey. Don’t know about you but 4 hours for 180 euro is not cost effective. Many Fuel stations all over, and 24hour with payment by euro bank card. No real issues. I have heard some like to break the journey up by booking b n b’s for one or two nights, but we travel as straight through as possible. Anyway hope the info helps.
