debating if I should buy a cheap car rather than keep hiring

debating if I should buy a cheap car rather than keep hiring

Postby karllap » Mon Nov 01, 2021 4:34 pm

Hi, We have just bought a holiday home and imagine that we will be using it for around 10 to 12 weeks per year to start with as we can only come over when my Wife has holidays as she works in a school.
I'm trying to figure out if it would be more cost effective to buy a really cheap car to keep here and use when we are here or to hire each time we come

One of the contributing factors is that due to us only being able to come over in the school holidays price of car rentals seem to be higher

Another option I thought of if there are any people or companies that do a car share scheme as I would guess there are others in my position and may work the opposite way round ie don;' use their house in school holidays as they prefer to come when its quieter and cheaper

Thanks for the quick reply, 500 to 1000 Euros is exactly the mark I was looking at, where would be a good place to look for cars at that price?

If you are in no hurry, wait and see what comes up on here. Quite a few seem to be going back to the UK so you never know what might pop up.

There is also a young lady who rents out cars on Facebook, her name is Lisa Maria Daly, they look like older cars so maybe contact her and ask what her rates would be.

That's brilliant thanks, is it a big deal to buy a used car privately in Spain? I change my car all the time in the UK so am happy viewing etc but no idea on the formal process of actual transferring ownership

It's a lot more complicated buying a used car in Spain as opposed to buying one in the UK. You'll probably need a gestor (professional legal aid) to assist with the transfer of ownership. You need to pay a transfer tax and all debts & fines stay with the car, not the owner, so be careful. A gestor will make sure that no debts remain.

Insurance will be via a Spanish company and will usually include breakdown cover, as you can't tow a car in Spain. Another advantage is that the insurance covers the car and usually any driver over 25yo, so your friends, guests, kids? can legally drive the car with your permission (which means that it could be shared). Tax is paid to the town hall via the Suma and is usually less than the UK, downside is that there's no SORN (well not easily). ITV(MOT) is required every year (for the car within your budget) and many garages will sort this out for you. Some parking companies will do this at a cost if you're not in the country.

There are a number of very good value parking companies near Alicante airport, where you can park the car while in the UK (300 euros or so per year). They will deliver your car to the airport when you arrive.

When comparing against car hire companies, especially with their increased costs, it's a no brainer.

Good luck.

Might be worth contacting Seguro Car Parking at Alicante airport. I used their car sharing scheme for some time before buying my own and a very good service. You can then get pre-agreed rates for "hire" all year round regardless, subject only to how many days a year you want to purchase. You deposit a sum on account and use that allowance through the year before renewing.

Also handy that you could elect a small hatchback for one trip and a big 7 seater for another if you had guests etc so depending on requirements for that particular visit.
