Documents to be carried in the vehicle?

Documents to be carried in the vehicle?

Postby Black » Fri Sep 07, 2018 7:56 pm

What documents are compulsory (to be carried in the vehicle) when driving? I've been given conflicting information, and have searched the N332.es FAQs without success. TIA

I had my UK car matriculated today and want to make sure I have everything straight going forward.

The road tax for 6 months was €6, which was a pleasant surprise.

IT doesn't mention your driving licence, and that's one you must carry ?

I think it is showing the documents that pertain to the car that must be carried. Your driving licence pertains to you.

It also doesn't mention the letter you have to carry from your Mum to show you're allowed out on your own.

All depends on the mood of the police and what time of day it is! Driving licence, padron, certificate of insurance with receipt that it has been paid.... If you have all that...They wish to make sure you have a first aid kit and triangles and fluorescent jackets...After that hahaha have your kitchen sink in the boot.

We were told at a meeting with the Local Police Chief that if you live here you don't really need anything. From your registration plate they can see if the car is insured, if the SUMA is paid, your photograph, your licence etc

.. and a friend was pulled up with nothing at all on him to identify him... but the police didn't bother they let him go...after checking the car

Despite the above, I think that you should carry EVERYTHING....

I’m a UK resident, but keep a Spanish registered car in Spain.
The only time I’ve ever been stopped by the police it was a random roadside check.
They started by asking for my NIE. I didn’t have my NIE certificate with me, but had a photo of it on my phone, which they were happy with. They then wanted to see the vehicle documents. I had my passport on me, so showed them that as well. They didn’t ask to see my driving licence, but I’m not sure if that was an oversight by them.

I now carry a photocopy of my NIE, Passport and driving licence along with the vehicle documents. You can get these stamped at the local police station to certify them as genuine copies, but I’ve not bothered to do that. I figure that if they’re hsppy with a photo of my NIE on my phone then uncertified copies will probably be fine in most situations.

Don’t forget that you’re supposed to carry a European accident report form, and in practice it’s good to have a couple of these in case you were involved in a multi vehicle accident. It’s also good to have a translation of the accident report form if your Spanish isn’t great.

Pete.
