Look at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/driving-in-the-eu

The UK Gov official site says you don’t need an International Driving Permit if you have a photo/plastic driving licence.

Be very careful on this
An IDP may not be a legal requirement to drive a private car (others are posting to that effect & I am not saying that they are wrong)
BUT
In the T&C’s of our upcoming car rental from Alicante airport
an IDP (if a UK license is held) is specifically mentioned as a requirement -
with a refusal to rent the car without one & possibly losing the hire charge for the whole rental period booked.
(it is possible that the insurance cover for the hire car company itself is involved in this)
I am deliberately stating the worst case - why not check with the hire company?
See the Do-You-Spain website for examples of typical T&C’s
e.g.
Dollar General at Alicante Airport T&C’s
International Driving Licence:
Please note that if you do not have an EU driving licence you will need to bring an international driving licence along with your original licence to rent the car.
