Driving after Brexit

Driving after Brexit

Postby jackiecostin » Mon Jul 19, 2021 8:46 am

Hi All

Not sure if this has been answered but we are hopefully coming out at the end of August to see our property for the first time in 16 months and have a Spanish car parked with Plane Parking. Can anyone let me know what I need after Brexit to drive the car in Spain. Not sure if my British driving licence will suffice anymore. ?

Depends on if you are coming out permanently or just on a visit. If a visit then you can use your British driving licence for up to 6 months in the year (2 visits of a maximum of 90 days). No need for an International Driving Permit although, for just over a fiver, it may be worth getting one.

If coming out permanently then talks are still going on as to licence exchange. At the moment you need to take a Spanish test to get a Spanish driving licence. I think they have extended the period you can drive on a UK licence as a resident to the end of the year (it was end of June, then end of October) but these things change. Only those who registered their intention to swap licences before Dec 31st 2020 can actually change the licence without a test now.

But keep an eye on the news. UK have said they will recognise Spanish driving licences in UK as long as they are valid so just waiting for a reciprocal agreement.

Thanks Marcliff, we will just be visiting and as the IDP is not a lot of money I will get one just to be on the safe side.

Bear in mind you need separate IDPs for France and Spain if you drive all the way.I've never been asked to produce but you never know your luck.

If your car is over four years old and, out of ITV, it might be possible for Plane Parking to organise this before you arrive
