Driving from Calais through France and Spain to Ciudad Quesa

Postby LOWSUN10 » Sun Feb 21, 2021 5:51 pm

Hi folks, I posted on here last week, but have lost the thread, so kindly asking again. Once it is safe to travel again, we intend to drive down the west coast of France, Calais onto Rouen end of first day. Next day drive down to Bordeaux, third day onto Zaragoza and final day onto Ciudad Quesada. I have not used this route before and because we have a small pet dog, we intend to use pet friendly accommodation in or around these towns and cities. Can anyone recommend decent places to stay over at a reasonable cost? I think it's best to break the driving up into bite size chunks, so as to get a proper rest on each day, we will probably be taking numerous doggie breaks en route also. Calais to Rouen is 132.8 miles, 2 hours 36 mins end of day 1.
Rouen to Bordeaux is 406 miles, 6 hours 13 mins day 2.
Bordeaux to Zaragoza is 306 miles , 5 hours 16 mins day 3.
Zaragoza to Ciudad Quesada is 326 miles, 5 hours 15 mins day 4.
I will be looking at Ibis chain of hotels in France as they seem reasonably priced, but if anyone can recommend any good places, then that would be most welcome. Thanks in anticipation and stay safe.

This will all depend on when you are going to travel and your residency status in Spain.
And there are quite a few posts on here about driving down on various routes plus recommendations for pet friendly hotels.
Have a look below at Similar Topics and see if you get any ideas from there.

Over the last 20 years, I have converted to driving both ways, rather than use the ferry down to Spain. Due to the higher cost of hotels in France, I try and get to Spain with the minimum number of stop over as possible. I also use companys SANDAYA, and YELLOW VILLAGE, 2 top class camping sites, and hire a chalet for over night stops. These camping sites have superb water parks, and usually have very good entertainment on at night time. They also have very good restaurants to choose from.

The motorway route from Rouen to Bordeaux is quite expensive, approx 74 euro, a more gentle route via Evreux, Tours, Poitiers, Angouleme takes about an hour more, but is 60 euro cheaper and a much nicer drive.
From Bordeaux try the Pyrenees route, head for Day, Orthez, Oloron Saints Marie, Somport Tunnel, Jaca, Huesca, Zaragoza. Stunning scenery and under 4 euro in tolls. No tolls from Zaragoza if you go Valencia (Ring Road), La Font de la Figueroa, and on to Quesada.

You could try Brittany Ferries overnight (pet friendly cabins) from a Portsmouth to Caen, then head for Nantes, and on to Bordeaux. Only about 30 euro tolls. The ferry disembarks about 8.00 so plenty of time for the journey to Bordeaux.
Enjoy your chosen route and please be aware of the new speed restrictions in France. Also it is illegal to use a Nav system with speed camera warning.

I think the route from Rouen to Bordeaux above is a good route, I do drop onto the motorway from Tours to Poitiers, at that section is very show lots of roundabouts etc.

As stated watch French speed limits, I'm trying to stop supporting the frence state and in general I drive carefully, but 80kph is slow. (See PM)

I found the worst bottleneck for traffic is around Bordeaux and somewhat unavoidable if going the Bayonne/Irun route to Zaragossa. I'd suggest stopping over just before Bordeaux and leaving next morning at a time to avoid rush hour as it can turn into a 3 lane car park . . .

From the north you pass through a tunnel under part of Rouen. You then cross the river.Thr right lane loops underneath and you follow it until the A13 and on to Evreux if you wish. The left lane after the river proceeds across a few roundabouts for a mile or so and brings you to the main road out of Rouen which leads towards the A13 east and west.

Agree with Calledali
We did this route last week saved a small fortune in tolls and the drive from Pau over the mountains then onto A23 then A7 was a delight for us and our 3 pooches
Safe travels
