Hi,
We've done this drive loads of times but have generally had kids and wanted to get there the fastest route possible, so used toll roads and just drove. If that meets your requirements I've found the best and least congested route to be;
Calais - Rouen 2-hrs - Le Mans 4-hrs - Tours - Poitiers - Bordeaux 8-hrs - San Sebastian 10-hrs - Zarragoza 12-hrs - Valencia 14-hrs - Alicante 16-hrs
This route is all motorway or main dual carriageways from start to finish, except for about 5 miles going through Rouen
If you're not aware, fuel is expensive on French toll roads, same as UK motorways. We normally make sure from the UK we have enough fuel to get to Rouen where you have to drive round the city, this is where we would fill the car as will be much cheaper than the toll roads
As soon as you cross the Spanish border there is a services within 500 yards where you can fill up with Spanish fuel at normal Quesada rates....these services are not very well sign posted and it's easy to miss so stay right lane when crossing into Spain
At a steady 85-90mph you can do the route in circa 16 hours. Remember French and Spanish toll roads are 82mph with little tolerance....if you see a speed camera sign in France or Spain, there will be a camera 200m or so up the road
I've never stopped overnight but people have suggested to me that San Sebastian or Pamplona are OK
If you've never done the drive before, I would suggest a cool bag or 12v powered cool bag with several 500ml bottles of water for each person, grapes, apples and maybe a wrap or sandwich
If you have kids or even several adults make sure you have plenty of 12v & USB charger available, everyone's mobile will want charging
You will probably want to stop for a wee break, every stop adds 15-mins to your journey time and after 14-hours you just want to get there
Try and get some Euro coins, we have found the coffee machines in French services to be OK

I believe now with Brexit you have to have a GB sticker on your car, even with European number plates
Good luck & have a good drive

Perfectly good route described above.One small deviation could be made to exit A10 at Poitiers Sud to get cheaper fuel from Auchan hipermarket adjacent to exit.From this point take N10 to Bordeaux.This is also dual carriageway and shorter mileage with cheap fuel or refreshment facilities in the Barbezieux area.

Not sure if this will be “strictly policed” but my motto is always - “don’t make it easy for them to stop & fine you”

I read last week that I need a U.K. sticker on my car as the G.B one will not be recognised from 28/09/21
