I’d double check the small print very quickly we did and got a nasty shock, I wasn’t insured being Spanish driving licence, I don’t think as a Spanish resident you can legally own a UK car

Insurers may expect but will never 'assume' anything!

They ask direct questions, including about residency and what licence you hold (does NOT have to be UK), and expect those seeking cover to be completely honest and neither lie or omit pertinent details, it's called 'utmost good faith' and the core rule is, if in any doubt disclose.

That's completely wrong!

Firstly you do not in fact even need a driving licence to be able to buy and own a car in UK, nor in Spain for that matter.

Secondly there are many thousands of non UK licence holders living in UK who perfectly legally own and drive UK cars in UK.

The problem, as already said, comes down to insurance as UK insurers will not cover non UK residents, it's normally the very first question on an application form and if the answer is NO then the application ends right there.

From all the OP has now revealed the simple answer to their problem is that they don't have one, the car is registered and insured by their granddaughter and they are named drivers. The fact they bought it from her makes no difference as she is still the registered keeper.

A bit of discussion here, we own a car in the UK that we drive when home , we are insured through my grandaughters ins, are we legal allowed to own n drive a car in UK with Spanish licences???

I would advise you transfer your car into your grandaughters name she gets it insured and puts you on the policy then you are perfectly legal, make sure she tells the insurance company about you

Once the Insurance Company are aware the named drivers have a valid Spanish driving licence then everything is in order. I would have thought the Insurance Company would have asked that question anyway even if the policy holder hadn't said it at the time, or thought it wasn't even relevant.
