Driving Licence

Postby aljen20 » Sun Oct 03, 2021 9:06 am

Hi everyone, hope someone can advise me as I’m at a bit of a loss! I have a very good abagado who sorted all our legal things, residence etc… and my husband’s driving licence when we arrived 18 months ago, we decided to leave mine until I had adjusted to driving on the other side of the road. I asked him 6 months ago about changing mine to a Spanish one and he said it couldn’t be done yet as Britain and Spain had no agreement on this. I recently read that all Uk licences have to be changed over to Spanish by the end of October and consulted him again but he still says it can’t be done!! Can someone advise me, Marcliff? Is this correct, also I’m 71 years old does that have a baring and live here permanently. Kind regards, Jenny and Alan

Did you register for an exchange with DDT before Dec 31st. last year, if not then I'm afraid you will now have take a Spanish test.

Sounds like you were poorly advised and will now have to pay the cost.

From DGT site:
"The UK effectively ceased to be a member of the European Union as of December 31, 2020 , so all trafficking agreements within the EU are no longer valid for license holders. drive issued by the UK:

As of January 1, 2021, the licenses issued by the British authorities will enable you to drive in Spain until October 31, 2021, and will not be valid to drive in our country from that moment on. Being of application from said file what is indicated in article 21 of general regulations of Drivers .
For holders of a British driving license who have requested the exchange, replacement or renewal before December 31, 2020, it is recalled that they will be processed provided they have been verified by the United Kingdom authorities before January 1, 2021. Applications submitted after December 30, 2020 will not be processed.
If you did not request the exchange before December 31, 2020 you will have to obtain a new Spanish driving license"

You became a Spanish resident `18 months ago (mid 2020) and you should have applied to exchange the licence before the end of Dec 2020.

The deadline of the end of October is for those who take out residency in Spain from UK to use their UK driving licence, after that they can't. It was also for those who applied before the end of Dec 2020 to exchange their licence.

I think this deadline was extended until 31st December 2021 but only for those who applied to exchange their licence before 31st December 2020.

Maybe your abogado is right and you left it too late to apply to exchange the licence.

"we decided to leave mine until I had adjusted to driving on the other side of the road"

I do not understand your rationale for that, exchanging your licence at the same time as your OH would have made no difference at all to that process.

Re-located here in May, and just about sorted the house out, my UK Driving licence is due to expire next year, as I will be 70, so I will have to bite the bullet and obtain a Spanish Driving Licence, I have only progressed as far as downloading some forms, updating my Photos, and trying to find out which Traffic Office Rojales comes under ?
Can anyone recommend a Driving School that may provide a one stop shop ?, as well as a GP to get the medical done ?, any good advice will be most welcome

You do not need a Doctor as the Medical centre that you will use has their own their is a centre next to the Telfy office in Rojales and also a very good driving school there .
