We drove down in January from the Midlands.
Dinner time ....ish ...train and then stopped at Abbeville.
Next day drove down .... mostly tolls to a small town called Dax just French side of the border.
Next day was about 8 / 9 hour drive to Quesada. Stuck to speed limits and had a very pleasant drive down. Booked stopovers on mobile as we were driving....booking.com or similar app.
Lot less stressful driving over there even though they drive on the wrong side of the road lol.
Have a great and safe journey whichever way you go and stop.

Most hotels in France take dogs..for a small fee..use Booking.com once you've decided your route.I use maps.Avoid low emissions zones unless you have cert...I found the A roads as good as motorways sans tolls which you put towards hotels..have a good trip.

Have you got a Crit'air, French emissions sticker, they can be obtained online for about 5 euros and are valid in Spain? We always use B&B chain, for a small extra you can have a breakfast, usually sets us up for the day until our evening meal. Basic places but clean and adequate

Have you considered taking the ferry to Santander and driving down from there?
Interested in pros and cons of going direct to Spain vs going via France.
Are French customs a consideration?

Looking for views from both seasoned and first-time travellers.
Thanks

Never done the drive through France, I’ve always used the Santander / Portsmouth ferry. The ferry is certainly very convenient, comfortable and stress free and involves much less driving. However, this has become far more expensive lately so I’m not sure how the two journeys would compare on cost or total journey time.

Quesada to Santander approx 9 hour drive and ferry crossing around 26-30 hours. Optional overnight hotel in or near Santander. Plus driving time and cost from departure point to / from UK ferry port.

I accept that I am more experienced than most but I have very rarely used a ferry direct to/from Spain on the grounds of cost alone.Having said that the ferries are very nice.Personally i drive every inch apart from a short crossing ferry.Roads in France and Spain are very light in traffic compared to the Uk,particularly overnight.Diesel prices are volatile.I fill up at the cheapest i can find in England and then near Pamplona in Spain.i have a half tank when i arrive in Quesada. For a very fast journey use French motorways but expect to shell out the thick end of 100€on tolls.Alternatively you could pay none at all. There are numerous good roads adjacent to motorways. No tolls in Spain. The choice is yours.I expect 16 to 18 hours to drive from Dieppe to Quesada, excluding comfort breaks.I don't bother with hotels.
