Help buying second hand car
by Wabryce » Sat May 14, 2022 9:03 am
Hi
Appreciate this has been posted on many occasions, looking for a few answers to my questions.
Non resident buying from individual private sale
1- can you test drive the car under the present owners insurance.
2- is there a log book with cars in Spain similar to V5
3-does the car tax transfer with car
4- can you just walk into the Notary office to change ownership & what documents do you need to hand.
5-what is the cost to transfer ownership
6-when I buy the car can I drive it to my address under the previous owners insurance or do you have to have the car insured after you purchase it
7- where do you tax the car once it expires
TIA

I’m interested in the answers to this too. The whole process seems very alien to me and it’s put me off buying privately in the past.

Yes, it is the car that is insured not the driver so having permission is OK.
2- is there a log book with cars in Spain similar to V5
Permiso de circulacion and Tarjeta de Inspeccion Tecnica
3-does the car tax transfer with car
Whoever owns the car on Jan 1st is responsible for car tax for the entire year so yes.
4- can you just walk into the Notary office to change ownership & what documents do you need to hand.
No, it is done through trafico and it is the responsibility of the seller to change it. Best to go through a company or gestor who will do it for you for peace of mind. If you buy through a dealer they will normally include that cost in the price of the car.
5-what is the cost to transfer ownership
About €180
6-when I buy the car can I drive it to my address under the previous owners insurance or do you have to have the car insured after you purchase it
No, it has to be your insurance. The insurance company will ring you when you collect the car and send you the insurance cover note thing on your phone to start with.
7- where do you tax the car once it expires
Car tax in this area is collected by SUMA. You can make a direct debit with them or pay on line and every car is due about April time (end of March to middle of May)
TIA
