IDP if no deal Brexit?

Ha ha!! You won't need an IDP to drive in the UK with a Spanish EU licence though. Your last point is an interesting one, but I somehow doubt it!

On the other hand, I won't be able to drive in UK unless I get an IDP.
This means I can drive in a country where I haven't passed as test but will be unable to drive in a country where I did pass my test.

As the rules say you can't hold two EU driving licences at one time, I wonder if they might consider giving my my UK one back after we leave as it would then be one EU licence and one non-EU licence.

¡ Que Horror !

This was part of my worry but the current ( as at 21 February 2019) UK government advice is that the UK won't impose an IDP requirement on Eu ( incl Spanish) licence holders driving in the UK , so once I have changed to a Spanish licence I can still drive ok in the UK without a Spanish issued IDP - Excerpt here :
"You can drive on your EU licence when visiting the UK.
If you return to live in the UK, provided you passed your driving test in the UK or another specified country, you can exchange your EU licence for a UK licence without taking another test."

But of course since nobody knows the ultimate fallout from a no-deal brexit, it could all change and who knows. Will just have to hope for the best and go with the flow...

Interesting question. I'm just wondering whether you drive a UK registered car, using your Spanish driving licence, while in the UK. If so, is this legal?

I'm toying with the idea of swapping my UK licence for a Spanish one but I'm unsure whether it would still be valid in the UK. I'm based in the UK but could become resident in Spain (staying over 90 days & signing on the padron) but I don't want to become tax resident (staying over 180 days in calendar year).

The thing about the country of registration of the vehicle is linked to your country of residence, not what driving licence you hold.

If you become a Spanish resident then you can’t drive a UK registered vehicle in Spain (unless the vehicle is owned by a UK resident and they are in the car with you). It doesn’t matter if you’re using a UK or Spanish driving licence.

The same applies to the situations, as a UK resident. I have a Spanish registered car in Spain, but I couldn’t legally drive it to the UK.

Thanks Pete,

So the O/P, as a UK resident, could drive a UK registered car in the UK using his Spanish licence, a Spanish registered car in Spain as a UK resident but not a UK registered car in Spain, even though he is a UK resident.

The reason for my question was that if/when I eventually become fully resident in Spain (incl tax) I don't really want to have to retake my driving test.

You can drive a UK car in the UK with an EU licence. I've done it for the last four years and have double checked this with DVLA. You can change it back to a UK licence any time for free, but until 70 years old it is perfectly legal.

A UK resident can drive a UK registered car in Spain, what they can’t do is drive a Spanish registered car in the UK (unless it’s owned by a Spanish resident who is in the car at he time).

I am not sure if it answers your question, but if you check the following document, it may do:-

I think you went a little awry at the end there. As PeteKnight pointed out, he can drive a UK registered car in Spain if he is a UK resident. Where it changes is if he becomes a Spanish resident and then he can't drive a UK registered car.
And as Pete pointed out, same in UK. A UK resident can't drive a Spanish registered car in UK.
