Importing a car from the UK to Spain

Importing a car from the UK to Spain

Postby Nuts99 » Thu Dec 21, 2023 1:50 pm

Hi, I have a LHD citroen c4 that I want to import, I bought it over in July so it is already in Spain but on British plates. Who is best to deal with importing it that can sort all the paperwork?
I have heard that if you register it in Northern Ireland then you can get round the import tax?

Thanks

Contact Leigh at Spanish Number plates, not much he doesn’t know about importing vehicles into Spain.

Any idea how the tax is calculated. I've been quoted £1200 to register a 2020 merc but no info regarding the tax

As above, Leigh at Spanish Number Plates can advise you on all these issues. Each case is different so you’re best to consult someone who can actually give you authoritative information. Ultimately, it’s what most people end up doing anyway!

Not sure how it works in Spain but here in the Republic of Ireland cars imported from Northern Ireland are free from vat unlike cars imported from say England which are subject to 10% vat . One caveat though they must have been registered in N.I. before the 31st of January 2020 or only ever registered in N.I.

Hi when we first arrived here in Quesada we brought with us a UK plated Landrover discovery & after being here a few months we decided we had better go full legal as we were here to stay we asked around & were given several names but the one that was most recomended was DENKE which is in Los Montesinos just at the start its above the cafe on the left & has been going for years & still is we made an appointment & went to see them with all our paperwork to get it changed over they checked all paperwork thoroughly & suggested it would be easier to get it done in Murcia rather than Torry as it originally came from the UAE we agreed to that & on the day when i took my car down to them i asked is it ok to come with you & i was welcomed aboard on arrival he went into the office with all the paperwork & came back & went into a queue to get it tested it was 1 tester to start with the 2 then 4 then the boss came as well as none of them could find a chassis number anyplace so after giving the car a thorough check the boss decided a photo of the chassis number on the dashboard would be ok & did that & we got our transfer done after we left Denke said if that had been torry it would have failed & it was not over expensive to get it all done it was a few years ago now so cant remember the price. Cheers Doug.

Ireland and its situation has no bearing whatsoever on importing to Spain, and we can all thank our lucky stars for that, because Ireland and its vehicle import system is an absolute theft against its people. The Government do EVERYTHING to try and stop people importing cars from the UK because the prices on the showroom salesfloor are incredibly high. They charge VRT, a so called Vehicle Registration Tax based on fantasy figures on vehicle value, which is insanely high, then they charge for Nox and so on. Its why everyone tries to bring them in on commercial class, having to rip out seats and so on so they avoid most of the government theft.

Road tax for a normal Land Rover passenger car in Ireland is €1080 per year. 10 times more than in Spain.....its why I keep all cars in Ireland on UK plates and blag my way through checkpoints.

I agree with what you are saying re vrt and nox but it has nothing to do with the post brexit vat .
Thanks

300TDi where did you get your information from. Northern Ireland was given special status within the EU not just within the Island of Ireland. All EU rules and regs apply across ALL member states of the EU.
