ITV tyre question

ITV tyre question

Postby George » Tue Sep 11, 2018 9:40 pm

Can anyone tell me if there is an official Spanish website that can give me the requirements for tyres for the itv as there seems to be so many different answers as when I had my uk car itv for the first time it had four different makes of tyre fitted and it passed but it is soon due for another itv

My understanding is that the same tyres need to be fitted on either side of an axle.
They can be different types on the front and back, but not side to side.

Jim also agrees in this guide:

Also for registration of a uk car in Spain now a uk mot is valid for the transfer so you would think they would have the same tyre laws as the uk

I was advised s few years ago to change all 4 tyres on my car as they were not original size ( I had put alloys on and changed tyre size.)
Apparently tyres must be original specification. Much easier to customise your car in the UK.

The car manufacture tell the ITV the options about sizes or tyres and rims. You can not install just the option that you want.

You need to use the same manufacture and model of tyre on the front and the same manufacture and model of tyre on the rear. But rear and feont tyres can be different. The point of this request is that your car doesnt go to one side when your are using the braks ao hard because different models would mean different efficiency of breaking.

The tyres can not be older than 10 years.

Maybe someone went to ITV and the worker didnt not pay attention about something. You were lucky because that time you got the OK for your car but unlucky because maybe your car will be not safe in a bad moment.

I’d agree that passing the ITV with 4 different types of tyre could have been an oversight.

My 10 year old car went in for its ITV last month and I was given a retest date that was 2 years and one month later than the expiry date. This was a mistake by them that they couldn’t explain when I went back to query it and they gave me a new retest date which was 12 months after the original expiry date, so mistakes do happen.

I’m not sure if it’s a legal requirement to have the same tyres on each axle for day to day running, or whether it just applies to passing the ITV. If an eagle-eyed policeman spotted different tyres during a roadside spot check then I guess they could impound the car.

OP refers to "makes" of tyre, which is not the same as "type" of tyre.

IIRC for the UK MOT either crossply or radials are permitted, but both sides have to be the same type.
Also radials can be fitted front only, but not rear only. Not sure how relevant this is to the ITV.
