New Charges for Registering UK car

New Charges for Registering UK car

Postby BritOverseas » Sun Feb 14, 2021 4:52 pm

So, for various reasons I was unable to register my UK plated car here before the 1st Jan.

I went to a registration company the other day who are now telling me that is is going to cost me over 10,000 Euro to register a car worth a little over 21,000 Euro.

I was aware that before 1st Jan it was going to cost about 3,000 and although not happy about this I was willing to pay it but where on earth are they getting another 7000 Euro?

And that is apparently just the taxes, there is more on top of that for all of the other 'Fees'.

Is this correct, has anybody else tried to do this post 1st Jan?

The reason I was unable to do this was down to getting Residencia appointments, then when I did get them, Covid, then those were cancelled too and rebooked months later. Seems a bit harsh to punish us even more in these circumstances....

Any and all help appreciated..

It may not be very helpful to you,but the cheapest way to re register your car is to do it yourself.
I did mine 16 years ago when the cost was only a few hundred euros before Spain dreamed up new ways to get money out of people.
The whole process involved 3 trips to Alicante but I found the personnel to be helpful.I do speak Spanish reasonably well.

It is not really too much to do with the 'Process' the agent only charges a few hundred Euro's, it is the taxes.

Before it was a hefty 3,000 in taxes/charges due to the CO2 group the car was in (which I was going to suck up grudgingly), but now they want an extra 7000 EURO+ in taxes for import duty!!

Somehow, that is 33%, I am just finding it hard to believe this is real?

Possible, but I will take a bath that way too as it is a Leftie, nobody wants a leftie in the UK.

I bought it back from the Middle East with me last year when we moved back and anyway, I really like my car and it would be very hard to replace here, only seen one other..

I was just wondering if there is somewhere I can check that these taxes I am being quoted are correct or not..

Major problems in Ireland too. We import (or at least used to) a lot of used cars from the UK.

https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2021/0 ... r-imports/

"Since the UK became a "third country" on 1 January, used cars imported from there that were originally manufactured in the EU or another country outside the EU, must have VAT of 21% paid on the invoice price.

A tariff of 10% has also to be paid on the cost of the vehicle within 30 days of importation and before it can be registered here. "

Yeah it sounds about correct to me too. 10% import tax plus 21% sales tax, so that's roughly 1/3rd of the worth of the vehicle. And then of course the Spanish registration tax depending on CO2 emissions and age of the vehicle, which was already in place pre-Brexit as well.

I would be interested to know how you get on with this. I was under the impression with a GCC region car (assuming your car was built for that market) was extremely hard to register in Spain? When I looked into it the opinion seemed to be that a Euro spec built car (with CoC) was the likely only way to import the car. That said, I see a few US spec cars around so clearly where there is a will there is a way...

Well if the taxes are correct then I guess I have to make a 'From the Heart' decision whether it is worth it or not, at least it seems like the value after I have paid all of this seems to be not too far off..

As for getting it in, the agent didn't seem to be too phased about it being GCC spec, it is built in the UK and the only real difference between the UK spec and the GCC spec is that the side mirrors have a warning in Arabic (Closer than you think type of thing) and the manual is in Arabic, things like exhausts, emissions etc are all the same (I imported it to the UK first without any problems)..
