See link If you are an EU/EEA national living in Spain, new driving regulations implemented in 2015 could force you to obtain a Spanish licence.

Arrived last night and used Record hire company and they did not ask for the 72 hour DVLA number. However, this is our first trip this year and they stung us for out of hours charges which now start after 23:00hrs

I know if you are living in Spain for more than 6 months, you need to get a Spanish licence, which is what I have done. However getting the licence took 18 months for both 'er indoors & myself. Now, what is going to happen if someone is going to live in Spain for, say 7 months & applies for their Spanish licence. Then they go back to the UK for another 7 months so they will need to change their licence back to a UK one again. Then they go back to Spain for another 7 months? the conflicting paperwork would be mind boggling!
I don't know how long it takes to change from a Spanish licence to a UK one as I have always held onto my UK one, & got a licence in whatever country I was living in at the time.
A mind boggled Dingbat!

If you were only staying 7 months, or even a year or more, you'd be a bit silly to go through all the rigmarole of changing licenses every time. Especially as you only need to do it after being in Spain for 2 years on certain types of license.
UK says you can drive for 3 years from becoming resident or up to age 70 whichever is longer.

That's news to me Marcliff as the last time I checked, you could only hold a non UK driving licence in the UK was 1 year. Spain is around the same I believe. No doubt someone on this forum who is wiser than me will be able to let us know the exact details

From the gov.uk site for holders of EU licenses
You can drive in Great Britain on your full, valid driving licence until you’re 70, or for 3 years after becoming resident in Great Britain, whichever is longer
And from the uk.gov Spain site:
The licence must be renewed within two years of the first day of the driver's official residency in Spain.

My other half had the lady in Catral who does the fisitechnico, not sure if I spelt that right ! (hearing, eyesight, hand eye co-ordination) to do all the paperwork. She only charged 50€ to sort it and we picked up the licence from her at the office. No trips/appointments at Alicante/Trafico,worth every penny for a hassle free service.
